19-3 Birthdate?

I brought home a 19-3, S/N 7K56XXX from the gunshow today. :D I tried a search for an online S/N reference, but to no avail. Can someone here tell me the year of manufacture? Thanks.

Goose, what is your source? Is there any place online with this info or is there a good book to pick up? Or is there some formula to the serial numbers that allows you to determine the date?


On a side note, I just picked up a 29-2 SN: N4555XX ... you got a manufacture date for that one?

Zundfolge, 1979. I do not know of any sites online that have dating info for S&W's. Pick up a copy of Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson by Jim Supica and Richard Nahas. I bought mine used. It was backordered on Amazon.

It is even possible that your local library has the book. I found Bill Jordan's book there and other interesting gun stuff.
