Gun & Porn Magazines

Is my local Borders the only one that puts them on the same section of the rack? Do you think this was done specifically to make shooters uncomfortable when they come in to look for reading materials, or to make minors think that they can't buy shooting rags (see "illustration")? Or am I just reading too much into it? Remember, Borders has some of the most liberal looking staff (i.e purple hair, piercings etc) of any store I go to.

Well if they start putting 'Cigar Connoisseur' and 'Wine Enthusiast' in the same racks as the guns and porn magazines...

It's one stop shopping!

Ok that was bad. I apologize.

Haven't seen them do that at my local Borders.

Where does the uncomfortable part come in? Both together at eye-level sounds about right. You mean a neo-hippie or a soccer mom might look askance at the violent perv with the drool on his chin? Hey, they don't pay my bills.

I generally pick up gun magazines at the grocery store, book store or Walmarts. None of them sell porn, so I've not had this problem to date.

My local Borders doesn't stock any firearms magazines, so I've taken my business elsewhere. The manager acted hurt when I told him why I wasn't doing business with his store.

Heck. I open up to the center fold in both mags first. I whistle to myself and dream of what it would be like to have that altumite .45 and the 18 year old blond from Kentucky at the same time. Both just pipe dreams thou! I cant aford the hi-cap .45 and the blond. :D

LOL! Our Hastings has them in the same section... but I think it's because they're a lot more likely to get "cross-buying" than if they put the porn next to Martha Stewart Kids.

THIS:
"Hmm, now that I'm feeling all manlike and turned on by all these guns/women, I might go over there and check out those women/guns!"

OR:
"Well, now that I've figured out how to make a fireman birthday cake for little Johnny, and how to iron a perfect crease into the baby's cloth diaper, I think I'll check out those lesbian cheerleaders over there!"

The front cover models from Dillon Precision's "The Blue Press" is enough to get me going, plus get the best of both worlds!

Who holds a firearm naked anyway

Keep it clean and gun related and there won't be a problem. Just remember Art's Grammaw is watching.

If she is anything like my Grammaw was, there wont be a problem. My grandmom was a gun owner from way back in her IL days. One time me, my Mom and Grandmom were strolling through a thrift store looking for something. I was in the next isle over and watched as my Grandmom picked up a Playboy from a stack of used ones for sale. She thumbded through it, looked at the pictures and started snickering and laughing. I realized then she had a warped sence of humor.

As for the thread topic, I have seen the same thing here in IL. I really don't know why they do it, but it doesn't really bother me.
I buy what I want, and if there is an adult magazine next to a gun magazine, thats OK.

Why is this bothering me? Well I go to the store with my parents, since I can't drive on my own yet, and today I had to explain to my mom what I was doing looking at stuff off of that rack.... Yes it WAS a gun rag, before I get any comments on that :p

Most people would probably rather have you look at the porn than the gun mags! :neener:

They don't put porn near the gun mags here in San Francisco. They put the porn next to Harry Potter, etc. It is, of course, GAY porn...:what:

I noticed that gun magazines are placed way high up. Are they trying to keep short people from buying gun magazines?

The Borders here has gun mags, but nothing as racy as the trash mags at 7-11.

Books a Million near here has the gun and outdoor mags right next to the gay section. Probably starts some interesting conversations. Maybe the pink pistols needs a recruiting poster there.

I personally get annoyed when porn gets lumped in with guns. The proper location for gun mags is in the outdoors or sportsman magazines. The Borders you were in must consider guns to be in the dirty section.
:uhoh:

There was a guy who did gun shows in the PA area that go in trouble for selling porn at gun shows. What the hell was he thinking??

my local supermarket doesnt sell naughty magazines, but they do put the gun rags next to maxim/stuff/stun/fhm.

i was more than a little irritated to discover they stopped stocking BLADE and other knife magazines.

when i go to the checkout counter and have various gun rags and stuff or stun mixed in, the checkout clerk almost always stops to admire the cover of the gunrags, and doesnt even notice the semi-clothed female on the other mags. :D

I dimly remember reading some editorial back in the '70's about some guy (hey, I just remembered, I think it was by that Bob Greene clown from Chicago) who was on a plane and saw some guy looking at a "hard core porn magazine." It was a shooting magazine. Horrors! Disgust! Revulsion! He then waxed on about how it was worse than porn because of the innocent blood shed by guns, blah, blah, fart, fart.

I remember that some hunters invited Bob Greene to go with them. He did. Had a good time. Liked the guys. Still thought they were wrong on the gun issue. Further proof that people believe what they want to believe and gather those "facts" which support their preconception. In the immortal words of Bill the Cat: "Thppppwpphfft!"

Around here, the gun magazines are usually on the bottom racks at Borders and Barnes & Noble while the porn mags are up high.

On a semi related note, not to put forth the idea that I've lived a sheltered life, but I've never seen the inside (pardon the pun) of any magazine racier than the Playboy Girls of the Ivy League issue.

That's why I get my Cigar Aficionado mailed directly to my house....well that and the 2 for 1 subscription card they had.
There's always drool in the Gun rags.....
And since you need to be 18 to vote, shouldn't all politically minded things go in the same area?
Politics and Porn - a marrage made in DC. - Maybe just combine them... "Pornitics" - Sorry - just free associating again...

The stores are only trying to help spread gun ownership to the teenage males of society. Which rack do most of those teens make a beeline for when their parents arent around? From what I've seen (I always went for the gun mags, not the porn, I swear), its mostly the porn rack, and if the gun rack is right below that, they'll receive positive exposure to the gun magazines (until Mom comes up from behind and whacks them on the back of the head for trying to sneak a peek at Playboy, but then they'll try to explain they were only looking at SWAT magazine and not the Playboy in the next rack). Either way, its all good once you think about it.

In Dallas, Border's puts "men's" magazines, most sealed in plastic wrappers, next to the gun and general outdoor magazines. Also nearby are the scientific titles (astronomy, archaeology, etc.) and the history stuff. Muscle and fitness mags go right under the, "Playboy", "FHM", etc. material.

Just around the corner in one store (across the aisle in the other) are the aircraft mags.

I don't think they intend to disrespect shooters; the idea seems to be to clump titles with primarily male interest together.

They don't carry any "porn" mags, although I personally think that, "Penthouse" is borderline, and don't read it. I wouldn't ban it (I don't believe in censorship other than for minors or if the material involves bestiality or the (mostly mythical) snuff films. But there is good taste and bad taste, and I avoid titles that I regard as being in poor taste. Border's does carry some gay matter, and I personally have a sense that the chain may be owned by or cater to gays/lesbians. They certainly employ clerks who look to be hippies or others at the fringes of respectable society. So does Half-Price Books. I'm embarrassed to have to deal with these people, and the book stores seem to draw them like a magnet (as employees). Many are also rude and/or clueless.

Barnes & Noble across from North Park Mall has a generally classier staff and the store is overall exemplary, except that it serves Starbuck's coffee or something very like it. (To a coffee enthusiast, this is mud!) They need to at least stock Twining's or Bigelow's teas in the restaurant area, and get some better pastries. Border's dining is a little better, in the main. Girlwatching is pretty good in both, most nights. B&N tends to get more sleek women, maybe because it's across from an upscale mall where they also shop.

By the way (this seems to be somewhat germane to the topic ;)), I've talked to two Playmates in one Border's and to one of them also at a nearby grocery store. (Angela Little, a few months before her centerfold appearance, and Amanda Hope.) They were just in the store shopping; both read quite a lot, and were fun to talk to. I told Angela that I'm a freelance writer (true) and asked her about some ideas for articles at women's magazines. She was very helpful; we talked for about 40 minutes. I had no idea then that she'd be a Playmate a couple of months later, or go on to appear on TV. I recognized Hope (at least knew she looked familiar) and after we'd talked awhile, she mentioned having played clarinet in the Army band, and it clicked. She was witty and cordial, if a bit cynical at times.

By the way, B&N has, "Tactical Knives", one of the two places where I can find it in Dallas. Both B&N and Border's carry the other knife mags and most gun titles.

Sorry this went on a bit, but it may be of interest to those members who live in or visit Dallas, the center of the civilized world. ;) (Hey: Texans are proud people!)

My Kroger usually gets my mag $$$ because with kids I'm in there every 2nd or 3rd day.

To the right of the gun mags are the fishing mags followed by the airplane mags followed by the bicycle mags etc.

To the left and directly beside the gun mags is/are...... a large section of children's books, coloring books etc.

So when I stop to look for a SNG or Rifle the kids will let me cause they are doing the same thing right next to me. Course I get what I want but they stick me up for a couple of somethings too.

Haven't looked but I don't think they sell any porno at Krogers. Women are beautiful but buying that kind of mag is just something I never got into.

Why, they are to keep water out of the muzzle of your rifle when you're hunting in the rain;)
