I've been considering picking up a 1911 for some time now, and the Charles Daly pistols look to have a great reputation here on THR. Is $400 out the door on a "Field EFS" model a good price? Thanks for the input.

Yessir, we're talkin new. I've also heard these Phillipine made pistols have 2 different importers: the Charles Daly imported pieces and the Armscor line that is phasing into the Rock Island pistols. Some folks on the 1911 forums say the Armscor/ RIA have better customer service - Has anyone here heard anything in that regard? I ask because thru the same dealer I can get an RIA standard model, doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the Daly, for around $340. I'm wondering which would be the better deal long term when service gets factored in.

I like the RIA's myself. Customer service seems to be great. From my reading the RIA's seem to have a lot more possitive posts on many forums than the CD.

Go with the RIA. It has better reviews from actual owners and their customer service is top notch.
The only things to improve on are the sights, grip safety and hammer. And those should only set you back around $150 or maybe less. But then its really up to you if you like to or how much you wanna upgrade.

I'd go with the RIA, but before that... I'd go with the SA GI :D

The Daly and RIA pistols are all made by Armscor. I got into an argument on another forum awhile ago when he claimed the Daly pistols are built to closer tolerances than the RIAs and the ones Armscor sells under their own name. I said the tolerances are the same, and he couldn't (or wouldn't) document his claim, so AFAIK I'm right. (It's easy to be right when you get to declare yourself the winner of a debate).

Daly had a truly horrible reputation for (lack of) customer service. For the past year or 18 months it appeared that they had turned over a new leaf and were actually providing customer service, but just within the past few eeeks I've been seeing reports that suggest Daly's customer service has returned to the classic norm -- meaning rather worse than poor.

I would buy an RIA.
