News is reporting some Pilots as early as this Sunday will be carrying handguns while flying.

Anyone know what gun, ammo and caliber they will be carrying?

From the news videos, it looks like the .40S&W Glock.

The news story I saw (NBC Nightly News, I think it was) said they were practicing with their "issued 40 caliber pistols". Definitely looked like Glocks.

Issued? Issued by whom? I would have thought they'd be pilot-purchased...

They also stated that these 16 would be ALL that would be approved to carry for the first two months (at least), sort of a trial (one could say, "pilot") test before more are trained and approved.

I was pleased to see that the training DID focus a lot on weapon retention tactics.

They will be federal officers.
Since the attack on America, we've seen major changes in security at airports, and soon, we're going to have yet another layer of protection against hijackers. A group of commercial airline pilots will graduate this week from the Transportation Safety Administration program, designed to train pilots how to use guns. This is the first class to become federal flight deck officers at a federal training facility in Brunswick.

It's amazing the hoops they had to go through just to get this to happen. I know one of the excuses for not letting the pilots carry guns was "What if a paasenger gets shot". I don't know about you all. but I'd rather get shot with a Glock .40 than a missle from an F-16. At least I have a chance of surving the bullet wound.

Ahh, Federal Officers. I'm supposing that's how they got around any local concealed weapons issues (i.e., "Federal Officers" are exempt from local weapons carrying restrictions).

Great, now everytime a jet crashes some Glockophobe will say a Kaboom caused it.

Saw these guys shooting down at FLTEC at Brunswick GA on cable news... looks like they were shooting silhouette targets at 5 to 10 feet.

Wonder what loads they'll use... surely not full power 155 gr .40. I would have picked a slower bullet or maybe a shotgun for a pilot weapon.
