Question on private party ammo deal--please advise!

Hi all,

I haven't ever done this before, but would like to purchase ammo from a private party in another state, and am not sure what the RIGHT way to do the transfer is...

Are the specific carriers/ specific restrictions (as in MUST it be sent overnight)?

Must there be "lawful purchaser" proof, as with a retail transaction like ammoman or kiesler's?

Unless there are local restrictions, it is perfectly legal to purchase ammunition from private individuals in another state. The carrier needs to be informed of what you are shipping due to ammo's hazardous characteristics.

One thing to watch for, and that is the seller's status. An occasional sale of an overstock of ammo. is no problem. However, if he/she is doing this on any sort of regular basis (e.g. once a quarter, once a month, etc.) then by law he/she has to have a FFL. If not, they face serious hard time if the ATFE catches up with them... Another thing is the shipping. The ammunition must be shipped in containers that conform to legal specifications, and must be labeled as to contents (using the code normally understood to indicate ammunition by the carrier). If this isn't done, and an explosives "sniffer" picks up the contents at a parcel checkpoint (something fairly common now, thanks to the WoT), then all sorts of interesting things are going to happen, both to the shipper and to the recipient...
