How Many Magazines?

April 18, 2003, 09:33 PM
Anyone have a set number of magazines for a given type of firearm?

I'm settling on about 10 mags for rifle and 5 for each type of handgun.

For you guys who have like hundreds of guns, do you stock mags for them, or just have one each?

it depends on how cheap magazines are.

at one point, we had fifty AR-15 magazines.

that was when my brother was in the guard, though.

April 18, 2003, 10:13 PM
As many as I can afford. I would feel comfortable with 40-50 for working guns (1911, AR, and eventually MBR).

April 18, 2003, 10:19 PM
Depends on what they cost and how much I can afford to spend. I would prefer to eventually have at least ten magazines for each firearm.

Don't horde... sell to me. ;)

I like to have three or four good, reliable magazines for each gun. I didn't think to do that years ago, and now can't find magazines for some of my .22 caliber match pistols.

April 18, 2003, 10:25 PM
I have at least 5 magazines for every detachable magazine fed firearm that I own.

Some, such as the AR/AK/Uzi, I have 30-40 magazines. Most of these are used magazines purchased in bulk back before anyone had heard of a semiautomatic assaut weapon and they were dirt cheap.

Holy flash suppressors, Batman, 40-50 ROUNDS or MAGAZINES?!?!??!!

April 18, 2003, 10:34 PM
40 or 50 magazines per gun.

I wish I had been hording GI surplus 30 round AR mags, back when they were $10 a piece. I've only got 7 at the moment, and they are pretty beat up.

/me anxiously awaits September 15th, 1994

My personal opinion is that 10 for your main carry gun and main rifle are a good starting point.
After that, the more the merrier!:)

April 18, 2003, 10:43 PM
I like to have four to six magazines per gun, although I have a couple of "range guns" that I still only have two magazines for them at this point.

April 19, 2003, 12:00 AM
Beretta: 2-10s, 5-15s
Ruger: 3-8s
SKS: 1-10, 1-30
Kel-Tec: 2-7s

Would like to get all up to 5 each eventually.

April 19, 2003, 12:20 AM
My G17 has 8. 4 factory, and 4 aftermarket. I would prefer another 2 factory, but will wait until I see what gives with the AWB.

I just bought a S&W1911 and it came with 2 mags. As soon as the $25 gift certificate comes I'm going to buy 2 more Wilson combat mags; I hope to have 10 for that as well.

On a side note I have 4 speed-loaders for my S&W 64-1 .357. Don't really need any more for IDPA.

April 19, 2003, 12:56 AM
AK - two 10s, four 30s, two 40s - couldn't carry more if I had them
1911 - three 8s - whenever I have surplus funds, that will increase by 3 Wilsons
FAL - five 20s - five more would be nice
MkII - two 10s - never needed more since it's just a range gun

Everything else is tube fed.

April 19, 2003, 01:37 AM
I think that 30-50 mags per gun sound good for serious guns. At some point they'll most likely become illegal, so I need a lifetime supply. At the moment, I don't have anywhere near that many (!) I've got 5 1911 mags (2 Wilson, 3 GI), 7 AR mags (5 30s, 1 40, 1 Beta-C), 8 20-round FAL mags, 2 Colt 1903 mags, and 1 Enfield mag. I'd like to get three or four more for the Enfield and two more for the 1903, and then up to 50 for the others.

April 19, 2003, 02:04 AM
i have 6 mags for my HK USP 45, and 5 mags for my Ruger KP95. 20-30 mags for a handgun is excessive. you gonna carry all that 30 mags with you? i guess you'll need it when there's a platoon of intruders in your home.

April 19, 2003, 03:17 AM
Well... I have an awful lot of 1911 magazines. Probably more than I have for all my other guns combined. ;) I think I have about 20 not pictured here.

Usually I like to have three minimum. One to use, one as a spare and one as a spare to the spare. :p

April 19, 2003, 04:10 AM
Magazines and ammo go hand in hand, in my opinion there is never too many or too much of a good thing. Rafters creaking, floors groaning, forklifts beeping...gotta get more....bah hahahahahah

I remember going to a M-2 .50 cal range and a semi pulled up with a forklift on the back. In the pallets was 26,000 .50 cal rounds in belts...bah ha hahahahhha

All right I'm better now

cratz2 :
Dang it.... Now I HAVE to use that as my PC wallpaper @ work!
Nice looking collection....
Beretta 92FS - 2 - 15rnd / 2 - 10rnd / 1 - 23rnd
1911's - 5 - 8 rnd / 1 good Wilson (get more Wilson's-good stuff)
Beretta Jaguar - 1 factory and 1 aftermarket.. (the factory ones are hard to find....saw one for $75. - ouch/should have bought it tho.)
all others (22's and rifles) have 2 each.
Only have 1 speed loader for my .38 tho - guess I need at least 1 more?

April 19, 2003, 05:56 AM
I never stop looking for a good deal, but for a rifle or a pistol fifteen to twenty factory or equivalent quality original or higher capacity magazines per firearm make me all warm and fuzzy inside.

That's just my comfort zone though....I prefer more :uhoh:

$$$ Damn Klinton :cuss:

Imagine all the schooling and other stuff I could have payed for instead of magazines :(

I hope the AWB sunsets, but if it doesn't, at least I'll still be sittin' alright....

April 19, 2003, 08:49 AM
Skunk- Magazines. Notice I said working guns not playthangs. Looks like its time to brown bag your lunch eh? ;)

gudel- Actually I keep my magazines with my tinfoil hat. Beside that is the article about how the Red Chinee are ready to invade from that Costco warehouse in California. Gotta stock up! Really its because some gunowners actually train with their guns...and train hard. Magazines break. They get lost. They wear out. They are disposable. And since we know from history that the .gov will ban magazines, I want to have a supply that can carry me through my training.

April 19, 2003, 09:04 AM
gudel, as I no longer have an IFV to carry my stuff around, no I won't carry 30 mags with me. However, as Dan sez, magazines become damaged or worn from training. In a year and a half I went through over a dozen 1911 mags used in class. As well, carry mags get rotated and replaced. Besides the fight will last as long as I have ammo.:D

April 19, 2003, 09:46 AM
I use the following formula to calculate my bare minimum number of magazines for each fire arm type:

All I can afford!

Rifle w/detach mag (bolt action or rimfire) -5 mags
Rifle w/detach mag (semi) -20 mags of full capacity
Handgun that is designed to hold more than 10 rounds -6 full capacity mags, 6 Clinton mags
Hangun whos full capacity is less than or equal to 10 rounds -6 mags.

This is the minimum and in many cases I have more but it upsets me until I get atleast this many and usually buy them the same day as the firearm. This is regardell of it is a mk2 .22 pistol or a defensive gun and it is per pistol not type. For example since I have almost a dozen 1911 full size pistols I have almost 80 wilson 47's. I have 2 glock 19's so I have 12 10 rounders and 12 full cap.

I have serious storage issues.

April 19, 2003, 12:31 PM

Is the gun just "in the collection"? Then one or two magazines is just peachy.

Is it a handgun that's in my carry battery? Then four magazines is the minimum, more is preferred.

Is it a rifle that may be used for "social purposes"? Then a whole bunch of magazines, most kept loaded, are the norm.

As an illustration: I have two magazines for my Beretta AR-70 and fifteen for my HK91. Both of these numbers seem fine given the roles of the gun in question.

April 19, 2003, 01:52 PM

I'd love to have that pic in 1024x768 for a desktop. Laugh every time I see it, heh.

I'm ready to carry 330 rds of .223
220 rds of .308
250 rds of 7.62x39
135 rds of 12 gage
148 rds of .44 mag
37 rds of 9mm
51 rds of .45
32 rds of .380

And a tuff dolly to tote the gear. :)

April 19, 2003, 02:00 PM
At least five per gun, usually six. More for my 1911s, which I spread between two pistols.

April 19, 2003, 06:30 PM
The most I have is 4 for my SIG 225.

I am in dire need for the rest... though it's not a real need, I really only need backups for the guns I want to carry, the Kahr and Kel-Tec.

I only have 3 for the 1911, 2 for everything else except the USP, only 1... :(

April 19, 2003, 06:36 PM
As many as I can buy. Minimum is three and there is no maximum.

April 19, 2003, 07:13 PM
Well, I keep two Safariland speedloaders for my S&W 686, with an HKS speedloader standing by for emergency use in case of a breakage or high-speed/low-drag operation.

For my Ruger MkII, I have four magazines as that is plenty of shooting for a .22 and I really don't foresee using it defensively.

And my Yost-custom Colt 1991 gets six magazines, though I might bump that to twelve. I have five Wilson 47D's and a Wilson 47T finishes off the battery. This makes for an even fifty-round capacity loaded and ready to go. One whole box of hardball ready for action!

If I do go to twelve magazines, I'll have to get a bandolier.:D

April 19, 2003, 07:21 PM
No where near enough.

The AK has 10 - 30 round mags.

Most of the 9mm pistols have 3 or more Standard Cap mags and the 2 restricted ones they came with.

I'm adding to the collection as quickly as possible due to the AW law's unknown future. I guess it's a "Pray for Peace, Prepare for War" type of situtation. I'm praying for the sunset of the law but preparing for the worst case!

April 19, 2003, 07:31 PM
whenever I can afford them,as many as I can get, whenever I can get them. Online, gunshow, gunshop.Same thing with practice ammo, and quality ammo.

April 19, 2003, 08:17 PM
I just realized of all the magazines I own....I don't even have any ten rounders....

:D :D :D

April 20, 2003, 12:53 AM
for handguns 10 with five always loaded, at least where possible - some still need to accrue

for rifles, 20 with 10 always loaded - again where possible, need to accrue.

for shotguns - dang I wish I could find a good shotgun that took detachable mags! other than that Russian thing that looks like an AK on steroids, haven't seen one though, so that's an entire other ball of wax, as it were....

April 20, 2003, 01:08 AM
Well, I have worked up to having at least 5 for each gun.

April 20, 2003, 12:41 PM

Well. what about the InterOrd USAS-12 Auto-shotgun? They make a semi-auto one as well, don't they? That sort of looks more like a M-16 on steroids, but you get the point.

Actually, I've always wanted one... Makes a Benelli M-1014 look anemic!:)

Millions. At least.

Seriously, for toys I like to have at least four. I compete with some of my toys, and it would suck to DNF a match if a magazine breaks.

For guns I might take to a fight, ten is an absolute minimum. 30 is better. 50 is better still. For less-than-durable mags, like USGI AR-15 mags, I'd have half again as many.

Guns, ammo, mags, wine, books, and fast cars - you can never have too much. :D

- Chris

April 20, 2003, 10:35 PM
I used to think 5 each for pistols was enough. Now I have at least 10 for both P228 and 92FS.

Now long gun mags are another story. If it ever does come to TSHTF, you might not have enough time to restuff magazines while the lead is flying, therefore, you can't have too many. Hopefully the 2nd AR I get will help me push it to the 50 - 100 mark. :D

About 1/2 stay loaded up.

April 20, 2003, 10:45 PM
First, let me welcome you to THR. Hope you'll find us to your liking. Second, we here all know that that is a picture of Tamara's warehouse.:D :neener:

April 20, 2003, 10:59 PM
I don't remember who said it; but "How many Tamara has, +1" is the rule of thumb I would strive for ;)

April 21, 2003, 04:59 PM
Glock 17L - Have nine 17-33 round mags (219rds total), want another four 19 rounders (295rds).
Enfield No.4 - Have one mag and six stripper clips (40rds), want five more mags and ten more clips (140rds).
SL8 - Have two 10rd mags, want as many 30rd mags as I can afford (5 to ~10).

April 21, 2003, 06:53 PM
like most folks i separate "use and carry" guns from "fun" guns

"fun" guns usually only need about 3 in the gun, one to reload and one in case one breaks.

"carry" guns require at least 2 complete loadouts plus a, 7-11 depending on how many i carry on my duty belt.

all my semi-auto rifles have about 20-30 mags each because CA won't let me buy anymore.

April 21, 2003, 09:07 PM
Currently, I only own 4 mags for my XD-40 (but at $15 each, I may stock up on more while the price is good).

April 21, 2003, 11:00 PM
I think I have a dozen or so for .45 cal 1911's, since I have four guns they'll fit in. Nine for the 10mm. At least a couple for everything else.

The only gun where I have only one mag is my 1907 Winchester in .351 self-loading. Obviously they don't grow on trees, and the piece may soon go into honored retirement, anyway.

April 21, 2003, 11:10 PM
My buddy has a "body weight" theory he uses..

How ever many magazines it takes, (loaded) to equal your body weight...

April 22, 2003, 10:56 AM
I am in the same boat as Tamara ... depends upon intended purpose, generally.

April 22, 2003, 12:12 PM
bear in mind that some mags are more prone to failure then others...light nudge to 1911 users.

i grew up with the 1911 and was always taught to disgard (yup, throw away) mag bodies with cracked lips and dented bodies. makes for a habit of keeping a whole load of mags on hand (when the price is right)

it seems mags are tougher nowadays ... with the exception of german made mags for the sig 220, talk about cracked lips :cuss: . i picked up 25 of the new Novak/ACT mags for it...very nice quality

April 22, 2003, 12:28 PM
How bout a revo? It's got a built in magazine. :D

April 22, 2003, 01:11 PM
Anyone have a set number of magazines for a given type of firearm?
*shaking my head from the left to the right*

Not me...;)

April 22, 2003, 01:25 PM
I only have three magazines:
Guns and Ammo
First Freedom
That is what you meant, right?:D

April 22, 2003, 07:54 PM
for shotguns - dang I wish I could find a good shotgun that took detachable mags! other than that Russian thing that looks like an AK on steroids, haven't seen one though, so that's an entire other ball of wax, as it were....
