I may be looking at buying a 357 revolver soon and I have a friend who is thinking about selling a S&W model 27-2. I'm not sure of the year of manufacture but the gun is blued with 8 3/8 barrel and in excellent condition. I have had good luck with Taurus revolvers and was also looking at a new model 608 for $400.00 OTD. I'm wondering what the Smith would be worth because the ones I've seen on gunbroker are beyond my budget. Thanks in advance

A lot depends on condition, age and of course location.

Assuming the model 27-2 is in excellent condition:

For an S prefix serial numbered gun I would say $550-$650 would be a reasonable range, if it is an N prefix or any other letter than $500-$600.

If you live in CA these would be great prices and are on the low side. Since you are in Ohio you may notice that your prices will most likely be less.

Keep in mind that the longer barreled guns are the least desirable and are usually in the best condition because they are seldom carried.

B'man, it will depend on many things. "In excellent condition" could mean anything from truly like new to "most of the big parts are still attached" depending on who uses the term. Generally speaking, S&W's made prior to 1982 (such as this one) have the barrels pinned in place. This is generally thought to be a Good Thing by collectors. Generally speaking, S&W's made prior to 1968 have a diamond-shaped area around the grip screw that is not checkered. This is generally thought to be a Great Thing by collectors. If the M27 you're looking at also has the original box in good condition and the tools and cleaning stuff, it is a Truly Great thing. In all seriousness, somewhere between $350 and $500 will buy most M27's, unless, of course, it's one of those Truly Great Things.

I gave $400 for this one. It came with the wooden presentation box and original grips and tools.

I also gave $400 for this one. It came with a 3.5 inch barrel.

A Model 27-2 with the 8 3/8 barrel, presentation box, and all accoutrements in excellent condition can bring $500 with the right buyer. It will also go for $400 with the right seller. A fair price lies somewhere in between.

Thanks for the replies guys, I will check the prefix # and see if if it has the original box, ect. I was hoping the value wouldn't be too far above the Taurus 608 as I would rather have the Smith. I will try to get the serial # and post it if that would help determine it's value. Thanks for the help. :)

Expect the asking price to be above a Taurus. The good thing is that the price will always be above a Taurus. The Model 27-2 was S&Ws Mona Lisa gun. It will always hold it's value.

In my area it would be in the $400-500 range from what I have seen.
I just got a deal at a store I shop at on a early 6 inch 27-2 with box in 95% condition for $350.
I have only had it to the range once so far and found it to be a fine revolver, nice trigger.
Now I want another model 27.

Prices are on the rise but regional factors seem to play a part. I'd agree that the $500 ''region'' could be on the mark as a generalization.

The longer barrel versions will sometimes be less money than shorter tubes - depends on condition tho obviously. My 8 3/8" I paid $465 for 2 years ago at a gun show - bit pricey but became a ''must have''! - the 5" $400 (plus tax!) four years ago nearly.

My friend has the presentation box and all paperwork and it looks like he will be in the $600.00 price range. As this will be a range gun I would hate shooting a ton of ammo out of it as this gun has collector value where I could just shoot the crap out of the Taurus 608 and the 8 shots of .357 is appealing too. I just started shooting last year and I'm not ready to own a "safe queen" yet.

If you buy that gun for $600, take good care of it while shooting it for say 10 years, I would be willing to bet that you could get your money back and them some, if you decide to sell it after those 10 years, heck if you decide to sell it next year you could still get your money pack. Now for the Taurus, well I don't think they will ever have any collector value and if you buy it for retail you will end up taking a lose if and when you decide to sell that one.

I'll be honest. I'm not saying the gun and entire package isn't or won't be worth that, but $600 is a lot of money for a eight & 3/8 inch Model 27-2. That's NIB money, not excellent money. NIB means unfired. In my neighborhood you would be buying a $150-200 box and papers set along with the gun. I'd pass.
