Scope Mounting?

Hey,
Are there any tricks out there for level scope mounting? I've seen those scope levels and such; but, tightwad that I am, I was wondering if there's a way to do it without making a purchase.

You could level your rifle and hang a plumb line on the far wall and use that as a guideline
Or, you could take the barrelled action and lock it into a vise, level off the bottom of the receiver and then level off the top scope cap...
These instructions are for rough leveling of sporter rifles...

All I've ever done is just "good-eye" it in place. I might have enough off-plumb error to matter in way-out-yonder competition target shooting, but out to 500 or so yards I've never noticed any problems.
I do use a carpenter's level to set up my sight-in targets at 100 yards, which gives a pretty good check. I use the one-inch grid-type targets, not the bullseye.

i first find a referance point on the receiver holding the gun up to my shoulder.i then turn the crosshairs around looking at both the crosshairs and the referance point till it looks straight up/down and side to side.i check it by aligninging the horizonal crosshair with something like the tv top.take it outside and compare in daylight.tigten everthintg down and test fire it a few times.its important you dont have a "cant" in the crosshairs or one may hold the gun at a cant also unknowingly.

Good idea... after my little incident (http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=18737) recently, I'm convinced that all you need to do is make sure the scope is optically centered first, insure the rifle is level (in a multi-purpose vice), the rings are aligned, and you have adequate eye relief.
After that, just follow the advice of these other gentlemen, and make sure the reticle stays level as you tighten the rings. If you're really going to get obsessive about your alignment, you can mount the rifle in a vice, level it, and run the elevation up and down a turn while observing for any drift of the crosshairs.
