I went shooting at the local range today (five dogs), and enjoyed my first ever informal round of trap.

I used my cousin's 870 wingmaster (which was too long), my 500, which was also too long by a half inch, but fit me on all other respects, and my 20 gauge topper with a short barrel.

i noticed a couple things.

1. proper form and technique means more then the equipment.

2. my mossberg 500 will break clays if i do my part.

3. singles are doable with ghost ring sights, doubles not so much.

I didn't get to shoot as much as i would have liked, but I think I'll go ahead and get a membership to the range, some boxes of trap loads and some clays, and see if i can do better.

has anyone else taken their HD gun out shooting trap or skeet?

Yes.A riot barreled 870 with a mag extension makes an OK skeet gun, and that's terrific practice. Good for quail, too, and that's as much fun as I can have with my clothes on.

I doubt too many GR and Peep equipped shotguns willl win the Grand, but there's no better way to become proficient with a HD tool than shooting it a lot.

Dave, are there any tricks of form or technique useful in hitting flying targets with the ghost ring sights? My shotgun will be ready first of next week and I want to bust some clays and crows with it to get used to it.

HHhmmm....

I suggest premounting, getting your sight pic, then looking PAST the bead and calling for the bird. Swing the barrel along the flight path and squeeze the trigger as the bead passes the clay.

HTH, and good luck...

I have an MMC ghost ring sight on my Remington Model 11 that I set up for IPSC 3 gun competition. I also use it for Sporting Clays. I get funny looks when I break it out, but it works well for me, a non-shotgunner.
