I need some information on the Texas DPS Concealed Handgun Instructor course.

I'm a "Handgun Safety" (Carry Permit) Instructor in Tennessee. I'd like to attend the Texas course for the training value, and as an additional credential. I'd like for my wife to attend also. She'll have no problem with the shooting, but she's worried about how much, if any, she'll have to stand up in front of the class and speak.

Can any alumni of this course tell me how the course is laid out, topics, and amount of public speaking required. A syllabus or course overview would be great if anybody could e-mail me 1.

Thanks everybody !!!

boalex207,
The CHL instrctor program is run by the Texas DPS. The hold class every odd numbered year after the state legislature finishes modifying the laws. There is no "standing up in front of class" the course is all taugh by DPS training acadamy staff and CHL program staff. The course is a week long but you can qualify for the "short course" (3 days) with proof of NRA or other instructor training. All that has to be approved of by the training acadamy staff prior to the class.
You will have to get a Texas ID card since you are not a resident and likely don't have a Texas DL. The law was recently changed to include more nonresident eligability for licenses but I am not sure on the residency requirement for instructors. That would be a good question for DPS to answer. If memory serves me correctly, you do not have to be a resident but the range used to teach has to be registered with TxDPS which means it has to be in Texas.
Drop them a note at: chl@txdps.state.tx.us

Stay Safe,
John

ADDITIONAL: e-mail me at john@krtraining.com and I'll see about scanning the course syllabus and sending it to you.

he covered it all. I knew a guy who qualified for the short course simply because he owned a shooting range. I had to take the long course and the extra time was spent on teaching modalities.

If you don't already have it, this link should be helpful:
