Denver council to eye 2 new state gun laws

Two new gun laws passed by the state legislature earlier this year will be under discussion next week in the Denver City Council's safety committee.

Councilwoman Elbra Wedgeworth said the committee will discuss how the legislation affects home-rule cities such as Denver and what legal action the city might take if it decides to challenge the laws. "I personally believe that as a home-rule city, we have a responsibility to our citizens and our residents to say, 'Hey, I'm not a gun advocate, and we don't want weapons in our city,"' Wedgeworth said.

One law requires sheriffs to issue concealed-weapons permits to qualified applicants. The other pre-empts local gun ordinances.

The committee meeting is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday at the City and County Building. Some of the discussion reportedly will be held in a closed executive session.

'Hey, I'm not a gun advocate, and we don't want weapons in our city,"' Wedgeworth said.
What she should have said is...."But I am an ANTI-GUN advocate."
While I don't live in Denver, I do visit. More patchwork B.S. We worked hard to get this in Colorado..I'll Keep you informed.

that these big shots, who try to keep firearms out of the hands of honest citizens, should be REQUIRED to disarm themselves and not be allowed to have a bodyguard.
If we could make a law like this, there would be no anti-gun laws on the books anyplace.
During public meetings anti-gunners should be asked if they carry firearms or if they have bodyguards.
Make a big deal about why are they protected but we can't be.

The legal minds in the CSSA, who helped write these 2 laws, feel that a challenge would ultimately fail. They anticipated this when they helped draft the law, and inserted appropriate phrasing to prevent it. No doubt several of the Denver City Council have had their feathers ruffled, but I'd wait to see what the house lawyers have to say.

Couldn't happen ... but wouldn't it be fun to have the courts tell Elbra and her cronies that if they feel this way, they have to be consistent. They can eliminate "weapons" from their city, but they have to go all the way ... disarm their LEO's. ;)
