Does anyone happen to know what the W in CCW means ?
Silly question I know, but its been bugging me.

The states that use "CCW" must not be up to speed on "political correctness". "Weapon" or "the W word" is said to have a negative connotation - associated with criminals or warfare.

"Good guys" are instructed not to refer to their own as such, so as not to be potentially perceived as criminals or warrier-types. The teaching (the NRA way) is to call 'em what they are - firearms, rifles, pistols, shotguns - and avoid using the w-word. "Proper" usage: "He (the criminal) had a weapon. Therefore, I drew my handgun."

' Picked some of that up at too at DPS CHL (Concealed Handgun License) skul years ago, mind ya, at the same time given gobs of written materials that refer to "good guy's" handguns as ... weapons ... :confused: :rolleyes:

All that, and "weapon" varies a great deal from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. In some states, a CCW license covers all weapons that can be concealed. Where I live, it covers hand guns only: no rifles, shotguns, or knives. In some areas, it's any hand gun, but in others, it's specific firearms identified by make, model, and serial number.

If 'twere up to me, if you legally own it, you can legally carry it, but if you commit a crime with it, you're going to do an extra ten years' worth of prison time in addition to the crime's sentence.

Too obvious a solution, I'm sure.

Mine says Richmond Public Library...oops, wrong one. Here it is, it says:

Permit to Carry a Concealed Handgun
(Must be carried with proper photo ID)

So that makes it a PTCACH or a PCCH.

I use the CCW term to keep simple. Seems to be the 'accepted' term, for a pc of paper. I also refer to my conceal carry weapon(s) as CCW (s).

CHL, here in Texas, = Concealed Handgun License. Nope, handguns only--No hugeous edged weapons, brass knuckles, saps, blackjacks, maces, morningstars, throwing stars, caltrops, or the like.

Uhmmm--CCW = Carry Concealed Whatever. Let's get away from that narsty WEAPON word. :D

the proper legal term is, like Texas, CHL for concealed handgun license. CCW is used in polite conversation and refers both to the license and the weapon (there I used the W word) but for exactness in Oregon CHL is the term. Good shooting;)
