Picked up my Springfield 1911 in 38 Super yesterday. I forgot how much fun a 1911 can be to shoot. I started out shooting handloads since I don't know anyone in my area that sells factory rounds for 38 Super. My handloads worked out very well. My wife and I burned through 225 rounds in about an hour. 25 were 147 Hornady XTP pushed by 5.9g of Power Pistol and the rest were Speer 124 FMJ kicked out the barrel by 6.3g of Power Pistol. All the cases were Starline w/CCI #500 primers and all were loaded on my RCBS Pro2000 to an OAL of 1.260.
We had no ejection problems, but we did have 4 rounds that for some reason failed to cock the hammer. The next round loaded . . . but the hammer did not cock. A manual pull of the hammer was required. Any idea what this might be? The gun was literally right out of the box. When my wife cleaned it there was an excessive amount of lube/packing grease on it. I'm thinking this is what caused the problem. I shot it again this morning ~100 rounds and did not have any problems at all. Other than I can't aim as well as I did the last time I picked up a 1911.
