Someone here has tried just about everything within reason. Has anyone tried using a pellet gun as a shotgun? Small paper wad, 5 or 10#8 shot, another paper wad..............? Something that can sting varmints without doing any real harm or carrying any great distance? Chasing possums away from the garbage can perhaps?

I tried that once with a Crossman model 2100.....It wadded up and perma-jammed the barrel. I tried to knock it out with a dowel or something and just made it worse. I kept the gun for spare parts and got another.

What's wrong with a .22lr with those CCI shotshells?

Years ago there was a air shotgun about the size of a .410, can't remember who made the gun, but it worked. I had a friend who had one and showed it to me before he sold it. They were kind of rare, not many were made.

Crossman made a CO2 air shotgun that fired .380 caliber rounds. Very well made, gas cartridge was inserted under the forearm. Shells were filled with number 9 or 12 shot and then thrown away. I have reloaded them by using blackpowder wads. Not enough shot to do much damage other than sting a small animal.

Yes that is the gun my friend still has, thought he sold it, it is a Model 1100. His has the O-ring seal out of it, a odd shaped one with a ledge on it. He has been wanting to sell it, has all the accesories with it. It was good out to about 25 feet to knock over a pop can, but wouldn't punch any holes in it.

Tokyo Mauri makes a replica M3 Super 90, true its airsoft but it launches three 6mm .25g plastic BBs at a time at 250-300fps. It will punch a hole into a soda can, and offers fairly tight groups.

It leaves welts agianst human targets at up to, oh, a hundred or so feet if I hit a spot not covered by denim or leather. Should really discourage most vermin from poking around your trash can, God knows I'd never want to have someone shoot my dog or cat with it.

Think of it as less-than-lethal vermin control.

As a kid I had BB guns that didn't hit that hard. OUCH! I'll have to think hard since I have a very limited budget.:scrutiny:

A number of years ago I read that proportionaly powerful air shotguns are common in the Philipines due to oppressive gun laws, and that they are used there to hunt deer sized game. An old friend of mine who I haven't seen in years claimed his dad had such a 28 gauge, but I never saw it.

Edit: I just looked at Nick1911's link and that appears to be exactly what my friend described.

Excellent for scaring birds or vermin. If you know how to modify them, you can make them more powerful, but killing things is out of the question (unless you're hunting bugs).
