There has been alot of disscusion recently at my club about the oppresive rules and regulations in NYC regarding owning certain firearms....it has been brought to my attention that there are certain 223 PISTOLS that would not be prohibited by NYC law.
Well for starters I was told about the carbon 15 which I have been told is not the greatest and the company ..professional ordnance is out of biz.....anything else out there in the223 caliber that is considered a PISTOL?

Various single shot pistols such as the Thompson Center Contender and Magnum Research Lone Eagle. If you are looking for AR15 styles, Olympic Arms makes one. You can make one yourself if you start with a stripped lower, but it is easy to run afoul of the AW ban.

I posted that so that you read that again. It is possible, and legal to make an AR15 pistol. However, very strcit guidlines exist as to what is legal. This involves not only the AW ban, but also the National Firearms Act of 1934. I have no idea what other laws New York has that would factor into this. Two of the big ones are that the lower receiver was never assembled as a rifle. It has to be manufactured from the git go as a handgun. The second one is weight. To be a handgun and not an SBR, there is a weight limit which is very hard to achieve with standard AR15 parts. This is why the CARBON was used; it had a carbon fiber lower receiver. Put very simply, you can't simply put a new upper receiver on your lower with a short barrel and call it a handgun.

I had a serious jones for an AR pistol about 3 years ago, until I read up on 'em. If you want a neat range gun that makes lots of noise and bright flashes, go for it. It will get you attention at the range. But the short barrel makes the .223 perform abysmally. As I recall, shooting .223 through a barrel that short results in velocities lower than .40 S&W.:what:

I need some advice guys. I've been hunting around the web all day looking for a cost effective and legal way to build an AR pistol. I'm having little luck. So far, I see that I could use a Hesse arms stripped lower. However, I know that the Hesse name rymes with crap. Can their QC be so bad that they can make a stripped lower that won't work?
I see the PO AR pistol, but I don't like their rep or their lack of a forward assist. :(

Sonny, unless the guys at your range are hardcore gun nuts your not going to make any friends touching off a short barrel .223. I had a 10" contender and it lost its fun factor real fast.

bushmaster bought professional ordnance. They now sell the carbon15. I still like the OA98 better due to its more compact size (doesn't have that thing sticking out the back.)

Anyone seen the movie The Long Kiss Goodnight? There's a scene in the train station where the BG's have M-16 (well, full auto's) pistols...that was the second place I've seen them. The first was in the back of a pickup at the local range...now I wish I had asked the guy if I could've shot it! :banghead:

(they had let me shoot a few of their other guns...T/C .38/.357, SAR-1, 1911 .45 ACP, P22...so I don't think I would've been out of line asking to put a few rounds through the AR-15 pistol)

Is the Hesse Arms "carbon fiber" lower too crappy to function properly?

I believe the character of Mr. Clark uses a .223 pistol with a sling to good advantage in "A Clear and Present Danger.":scrutiny:

possible responses:

1. Well, either get a bigger safe or sell a few.
2. Send a hundred or so to me.
3. Can't help you, I've only got about 190.
4. Must be single.

Sorry, couldn't resist.

Go over to AR15.com under the "Build it Yourself"(or something like that) forum. Everything you need to know is there. You really don't need any special tools, but having an actual roll pin puch set is a really nice to have(and a clean working environment, with a few extra springs. Those darn springs have a tendancy to fly and never be found).

Vulcan over on Assaultweb built a super light rifle out of a Hesse carbon fiber lower and had very little bad to say about the experience(other than a missing spring hole).
