I have a 3x9x40 Nichols wide-view scope & I'm not sure which way to turn the windage knob on the side to move POI right & left. It has a marking that says to move it "Up" to turn clockwise. Not sure why it would specify "up" on the windage knob. Anyone have a similar scope?

If the "windage" knob on the side says UP, then you probably have the scope rotated 90 degrees off such that you are seeing the vertical adjustment knob on the side. Suggest loosening the rings and rotating the scope so that knob is on the top of the scope.
Good shooting and be safe.

both adjustment knobs say "up" - the windage screw is on the right side.

In that case, can you contact the manufacturer for info, fix, or replacement? If a new purchase, the store might replace it with another.
If you want to use it as is:
1) Shoot three shots at 100 yds using solid rest
2) Move the (Horizontal) windage adjustment 10 clicks CLOCKWISE
3) Fire three more shots at 100 yds using solid rest
4) Movement of new group from first group indicates clockwise adjustment direction for windage
5) Divide distance between centers of two groups by 10 and that is value for each click or graduation adjustment at 100 yds.
Good shooting and be safe.
