A guy had a ad in the paper for a S&W .38. When I called him about it I asked him what model it was and he told me that it was made before they used model numbers. He said it was made during WWI or maybe WWII I can't remember now.

He said it was similar to a model 10 with a tapered 4" barrel with half moon sights, 50% bluing tight lock up good shooter.

If any of you Smith guys could tell me what gun this is, it would be appreciated also is $150 a reasonable price given its condition?

It would depend if it was a .38 S&W, or a .38 S&W Special. They are 2 totally different calibers. If you see it, and it is a .38 Special, I would go $150 in the condition you described.

For a long time the S&W .38 Special was known as the M&P (Military and Police). When they started with their numbers scheme, it became the Model 10.

They are fun revolvers, .38 is a great target round.

S&W has made history repeat itself. They now have a semi-auto M&P made out of plastic. In future years, it will probably be given a model number, instead, so none of us can figure out what it is. ;)

$150? I'd definitely drive over and take a look!

Most likely it is a M&P, perhaps a Victory Model. Once you get it, post pics and numbers for more info. If it is a .38 special and is in time it's worth $150 though.

If it's a Military & Police 4th Model made between 1915 and 1957 (when it became the Model 10) it's worth $150 as a good shooter. The 4" .38 Special is the most common variety. The M&P is the classic revolver and everyone should have at least one. Knowing a good thing when I see it I have five. :D
