Another Newb Question...

How much difference does brand of brass make? Let's keep it simple and just use the big three, Remington, Federal, and Winchester, as the references.

Not much...Acuracy is dependent on many facters, mostly how well you maintain quality control. The combination of primer, case, powder, bullet and firearm is what will make the difference. Most people will never see any difference anyway no matter what they put together...As the difference is so minute... Case brand is mostly costumer preference...I use all three that you have mentioned and several others. If you take the worst and the best you will see a difference. Example: My Colt .45 ACP really does well using TZZ Match and can't hit the broad side of a barn using A-merc. TZZ Match seem to be hard to find here and A-merc are a waste of time (in any calibre) and I just trash them.

In most calibers, with mild loads, it doesn't matter. With loads approaching maximum, it can make a difference. The different cases can have different capacities. Not important at moderate pressure, but can be important if you substitute a lower capacity case for a higher capacity case after developing max loads in the higher capacity case.

It depends upon what you're reloading. With pistol, it doesn't make much difference, except DO NOT, whatever you do, use Amerc brand brass. The stuff is junk.

I've found I like the military surplus brass the best, with Winchester and Remington a close second and Federal third when loading rifle. Greek military surplus brass is also very good. I avoid PMC and PMP for reloading anything but bolt action cartridges, as the one's I've gotten are very soft and the rims rip easily under semi auto extraction.

I generally use all brands, but separate by manufacturer and year and number of times fired while inspecting everything I reload after it's out of the tumbler.

Hope this helps,

Thanks for the info...

Right now, I've settled into 7mm-08. I have mostly R-P and Federal, only two Winchester.

This thread kinda goes along with the cataloging thread I started. I'm in the process of divising a method of cataloging that works for me. In the process, the brass branding is a useful tool in helping keep track of what I used where. As well as several different color sharpie markers, ammo cases, and of course the use of a spreadsheet. :)

Tom you are into this way more then I am. But I'm glad that you are. Because you are kind enough to post your findings here for all to read. Always glad to know there is another reloading in the city. :)

Thanks!! I'm not THAT much into it just yet. I'm still learning. And will be for a LONG time. Knowledge is never a bad thing to accumulate, and even better to share.

Where do you shoot? How often?
