I'd imagine it'd do just fine. Probably a little heavier than necessary, but no biggie there. You probably know how to engage the by pulling the cocking piece and twisting it to the other notch. You couldn't disengage it both quickly and quietly, so that might be a drawback, and if you don't want to use iron sights, then you'll have to find a scope mount for it. But all in all, for $100 bucks, you'd be hard pressed to find a better hunting rifle.

I'm not sure where you'd get non FMJ ammo, however. Hmm... I might have to load up some softpoints for this fall...

Take my comments with a grain of salt, my only "hunting" rifle right now is a Mosin Nagant "sniper" (scope and mount weren't original to that particular rifle), so compared to the Mosin, the k31's a Cadillac.

I plan on putting aperature sights on it so not a permanent modification. Trigger breaks like glass. I only wish my other rifles had that good a trigger. I reload so no problem getting hunting ammo. Disengaging the safety will take some care and consideration. That is the issue I am curious about - whether it is any significant handicap.

I took one out to my stand once, and yes, it is long and heavy and its hard to re-engage the cocking piece quietly and even more so quickly. You can get Hornady soft points for it from Graff and sons or Sportsmans Guide. I think the iron sights are fine on it out to 100 yards, its defintely the most accurate gun I've ever shot with irons. I didn't kill anything with it, but I may yet one of these days.
