please give your thoughts on the following:

marlin .35
some kind of old, single shot 12 gauge
handcrafted, wooden gun cabinet

$500

it's an hour and half drive to go see this stuff. is it worth going for a look? a friend of my dad knows an old guy that's getting rid of some suff...old hunter. supposedly the weapons are very well-maintained, and he crafted the cabinet himself...oak. i don't "need" any of this, but i'm especially intrigued by the marlin..it's an old one. opinions on the package, and some opinions on the marlin .35 would be appreciated. i know absolutely nothing about lever guns of any caliber.

I recently bought a 80%+ Marlin 336RC in 35 Remington for $200. That was a good deal, but still......

Five hundred clams sounds a bit proud, to me.

Well, Marlin's been making the basic 36/336 action since 1893 - seems to work OK. There have been a few different 'trim levels' of the 336 (fancier stocks and such, 16"-20" barrels, etc.) but the basic action hasn't been significantly redesigned since 1936 or so. They're fast handling and relatively light; the flat receiver and balance make then natural for woods carry. They're a side-eject design, so if you scope it the brass won't try to occupy the same space as the scope.

The 35 Remington is a fine sub-200 yard thumper; the nominal load shoots 200gr .358" bullets at around 2000fps and makes a big hole in whatever it hits.

I've got a Marlin in 35 Remington and I enjoy it a great deal. Bought mine used in mint condition for just under $200, including the scope that was already mounted on it and a box of 20 year old ammo from Kmart. ($8!!)

It's a wonderful gun. Has just a hair more recoil than the 30-30 but otherwise shoots just about the same. Realize that ammo will tend to run a bit more and you'll have a smaller selection of factory loads available. Also realize that the 30-30 shoots flatter and has more energy at any given range than the 35 due to it's higher velocity. It does handle rounds that are 30-50 grains heavier and it's 35 vs 30 caliber. Only you know if that's important to you.

Old single shot 12 gauge? Unless it's a collectors item of some kind I'm figuring it's worth less than $100. Maybe even $75

So you wondered about "the package". In my area I figure a rifle worth maybe $200, a shotgun worth maybe $80, and a cabinet. So how much is a gun cabinet worth to you? If it's worth more than $220 then it's a good deal. Unless you couldn't care less about the shotty in which case the gun cabinet would have to be worth even more.

If all you want is the rifle then look around for one and see what you think. No point in buying all the other stuff is all you want is a .35. Maybe you could offer to buy just that instead?
