Anyone know? I don't mind surplus at all, just as long as it doesn't have laquer and is non-corrosive.

Well, Spillway Sportsman is offering UMC 123gr 7.62x39 FMJ for $5.99 a box.

But for cheap non-Russian brass-case, this is probably your best bet http://www.impactguns.com/store/index.html
They offer a product manufactured for the defense industry of Zimbabwe  under the name "Cheetah" for $5.89 a box of 40 (roughly $2.95/20, not a bad price):
SPECIFICATIONS:
Caliber: 7.62 x 39 FMJ
Equipment: NORINCO, imported new from China in 1995
Bullet: 123 gr lead core, full copper jacket
Case: Brass
Powder: Non-corrosive

I really don't mind if it's Russian as long as there is no laquer. Brass cased would be nice too.

The Silver Bear "Effect" ammo isn't laquered. It's got a case plated with nickle or something.
Cheaper than Dirt (www.cheaperthandirt.com), J&G (http://www.jgsales.com) and some others have it right now.

FWIW- I have seen two Cheetah brass- X39 shells have the rear of the case ripped off leaving the rest still in the cnamber on a Chi-comm SKS. I stick with steel cased stuff for commie guns.

It's been a while.
Does any one have any more experience with the Norinco Cheetah brand ammo? I really like the specs on the ammo I'd hate to not order it based on one negative opinion. It's a serious negative, so right now I'm thinking it's not worth the risk. Can anyone convince me otherwise? I'm planning on using it in a AK clone WASR-10.

Wolf came out with new, non-laquered ammo about a month or two ago.

I was in the same boat as you two months ago. I had never used Russian ammo and didn't want to. However when I took into consideration I could buy 5000rds of Russian ammo for the price of 1000rds of American ammo and also the fact that commie guns were designed for commie ammo I decided to give it a try. After having shot a case of the new polymer Wolf and a case of the Silver Bear soft points I believe Wolf is great plinking ammo and Silver Bear I would bet my life on.

I bet I put over 7 thousand rounds of Wolf through my old MAK-90 and I think I may have cleaned it once or twice. There is nothing wrong with the stuff.
I have shot thousands through Glocks, Smith's, SIG's and others and am now shooting it in my RRA AR. I went over 600 rounds with my RRA before I stopped to clean it. The reason? I ran out of ammo.
