Average Joe--Go to www.surplusrifle.com where there is MUCH discussion on the possible and impossible modifications to an SKS.
I'll just say for starters that unless you have a Chinese SKS-D or -M, you DO NOT WANT to try using an AK-type mag in an SKS. They are not made for them, they do not like them, and you will have endless hassles. The 10-round built-in mag, OTOH, works like gangbusters, and there are plentiful and cheap stripper clips available which will restock that mag with ammo in a quick and efficient manner, with a little practice. (The models D and M are made for AK mags, and work nice with them. You pay a premium for this, of course.)
And of course, the question occurs to me, what would you want to take 30 shots at that you couldn't kill in 10 shots?

Sounds kinda like a former firearms manufacturer.
The main reason, and only reason, is that he'll do it because he can and it's his rifle. Plain and simple :)

Bill Ruger (Assume that's to whom you refer) was selling his product--a 10-shot rifle, the extremely popular 10/22. No quarrel here with a man trying to sell what he makes. And incidentally, there are huge-capacity aftermarket mags for that weapon. The difference is, that those mags generally work well in that rifle. They are designed for it.
OTOH, the AK-designed mags generally work poorly or not at all in the SKS, except the 2 models that are made to work with those mags.
I apologize if I come across like some kind of gun-banner or mag-capacity-banner--I'm not one, far from it. But I am a fan of the SKS, and I'm trying to save Average Joe a hassle.
When I pull a trigger 10 times, 10 holes in the target are expected. If I want 10 more holes I don't mind reloading. I'm working on an SKS now to make it put 'em all in the bullseye--stoned the sear, now will take it to the range and assess the change in trigger pull.
Agreed, Average Joe's SKS is HIS weapon, and ultimately the choices as to what tacti-cool retro attachments he makes to it are, as you stated, his.

How about a mob of 20 assailants come at you? There is a saying in military planning circles to the effect that for every given weapon and weapons system, there is a hypothetical, unlikely situation in which it will not work.
Anyhow, I think Possum has the answer for this particular hypothetical.

I would visit the sks forum http://www.sksboards.com/forum/ lots of good talk about "bubbafying" sks's there.
Personally I would save your money and buy an AK or AR-15. I bought an SKS as my first semi-auto rifle but what I really wanted was an AK and it wasn't long before I bought an Arsenal slr95. Then I figured I needed an ar-15 :uhoh: The madness never ends with these things that go bang ....

Thanks for the input, I know the AK mag conversion is dreamlike, but the shorting of the gas tube and barrel are possible. As far as round capacity 10 may be practical, but 30 just seams more fun. I’m going to get an ak-47 as my next project and I’m looking at clinching 2-30 rounder’s together, why…because I think it’s cool.

How do you disassemble such a SKS?

there is a cut out in the front of the pistol grip to give access to disengage the locking lever behind the trigger guard and the rest is normal. The pic at the start of this tread was customized on my computer to show what a short barrel version with ak mag could look like but the stock is sold by tapco.
