Ok, heres what I'm thinking. I have a standard Chinese SKS with a spike bayonet. I just purchased the tactical style stock pictured at the top from TAPCO. If you notice it has accessory mounting rails on the fore end. What do you think of the second picture as my choice for a scope(third pic is the 4choices of reticle patterns). What I'm looking for is not something to shoot in competitions or take down a gopher at 2000' yards, just a good powerful rifle for the day when I might have to face the aftermath of a Katrina or worse. Now this weapon wouldn't be my only option for home defense but it would definatly be my most high powered.(I also keep handy a 18.5" pump shotgun and a Springfield 1911 .45) Will this type of red dot scope stand up to the beating of an SKS. Will it provide me with any accuracy at all. I like the idea of the quick acquisition and the large field of view. Love to hear you thoughts.

Tarheel,

I have an SKS that I use for a truck gun that I have cut down & re-stocked. Weighs 6 and 3/4 pounds and I like it. I use the iron sites, so I can't comment on the optical.

I had one of those type of sights. I liked it and it was accurate, but the G3 clone I had it on beat it to death. Popped out the combiner glass in the middle of a 3-gun match. 7.62x39 out of an SKS is a pussycat comparatively speaking. Mine was a cheapie though ($80), so take that into account.

take down a gopher at 2000' yards

Is this possible with a 7.62x39 fired out of an SKS? Can you see 2,000 yards down range with out a high power scope?

Uh...I think he was using a bit of exaggeration there....

The sight would probably be ok if you use one of the forward mounts. The receiver cover mounts are notorious for not holding accuracy well.

tarheelson, a less expensive choice that doesn't require much modification is TechSights (http://www.tech-sights.com/). It's a receiver mounted rear aperture sight. It's not as high tech as the optical you're asking about, but it has improved the accuracy that I get with my SKS.

Ive heard mixed things about that sight. They seem to be okay. On a .223 they would probably hold up better though.

Not to distract from the scope question but how do you like that stock? I just got a flyer from Tapco and was considering one.
