What type of rifle cartridge do you prefer for your truck rifle? By “truck rifle” I mean the rifle that you carry in your vehicle for impromptu target shooting, chance opportunities at game animals or varmints, and/or for SHTF situations (i.e. Beltway Sniper, Charles Whitman/UTAustin, Hollywood Shootout, etc.). In other words, what do you carry (or would you prefer) to use for a truck rifle.

Depends on where I am and where I'm going. Cross country, it's a Lightweight Commander, living in the console.

Right this instant, it's a GI Carbine on the package tray behind the seats. It wouldn't do me much good, though, when I'm 100 yards from the turck, cutting and poisoning mesquite. Maybe the mix of diesel and herbicide would be effective out to four or five feet. :D

If I'm really "checking pasture", it's a scope-sighted rifle, usually a .223 or .243. For the far-back-country runs, where it'll be an '06.

Well, my 'truck rifle' is actually a 'trunk pistol' it's a Springfield Lightly Loaded with 5 magazines - 4 with ball ammo and 1 with 230 Gr +P Gold Dots.

A truck is quite a big critter so I have to go with a 30.06 or some other large rifle and hope to hit it in the vitals. A 9mm won't stop a truck.

SKS. Cheap rifle, dont mind it getting banged up a little, cheap ammo, reasonably accurate, and short/light.

I'm thinking about getting an old Enfield No1MkIII and cutting to a 20 inch bbl. Might even have it converted to fire 7.62x39. I've found a guy that does that conversion, but not sure if he does it on the No1 action... he only refers to doing it on No4 receivers.

Nice, huh? .308 whoop-a$$ in a short rifle. Not too expensive, either. Perfect for a truck rifle.

If it's a "run what ya brung " thing . I usually am not to far from a M1 or a M1A .

Chances are it could be anything from a 22 to a shotgun. If I'm hunting its a 30-06, if I'm driving around my buddy Bryan's ranch its a 223.

The most often seen "truck gun" is a 30-30 in a window rack, and its not a bad choice.

I always have at least one CCW, 9mm or 45 ACP. AS CRSam says-one never knows...

From there anything goes, who knows. I've been using more handguns and shotguns for hunting the last # of years. I need to get back into rifles.

I usually don't carry a rifle in my truck. But if I were going to, it'd probably be my SLR-95.

Here in South Caronlina, locally known as God's Country, the prefered truck rifle varies due to seasonal concerns.

Since Deer season runs from Aug. 15th to Jan. 1, during that period, the favorite truck rifle is the current deer rifle[M70 Win. in .308,30/06, or 300winmag]. This is because you never know when you might get off work early enough to make it into a treestand before dark;)

After deer season, the truck gun is usually a .22, .22 mag, or if I'm feeling frisky, my AR. This time of year, the truck gun is there mainly because you might need to dispatch a feral dog/cat/hog that is causing problems....or you might just get of work in time to go plinking. The rifle is mainly in the truck this time of year because....well....it just doesn't feel right not having one in the truck.

Of course the social reasons that the "truck rifle" may be called for are always in mind, but any of the above mentioned rifles, plus my CCW .45acp, should be enough.

Oh yeah, during the month of April, the truck rifle is replaced with the truck shotgun[ Remington 870 turkey express, 12ga, 3" mag], becasue you never knowwhen you might get off work early[or decide to go in late] and go turkey hunting.

On the Truck and the Situation.

If it's a light critter, like a Ford Escape, Hyundai Sante Fe or even a Jeep Cherokee, and its moving away from me; I like to use a AR-15 loaded with 5.56 tracers. Two or three into the fuel tank makes a pretty specatular show.

Now if it's a large truck, a heavy beast, like a Dodge Ram or Ford Heavy Duty, and closing rapidly; my Barret loaded with 50BMG AP does a good job of stopping in dead in its tracks.

Make sure you check your local regs before you go out truck shooting, and of course, your results may vary.
