Please contact the Assembly Public Safety Committee members and urge them to pass this bill along for consideration by the full Assembly. It isn't perfect, but it's a heck of a lot better than what we have now!

I read the text of the supposed law. I'm a reasonably literate person of average or maybe even above average smarts, but I couldn't figure out what this bill is about, other than leaving your heirs an assault weapon in your will provided you already have one, legally owned and registered, to leave. And maybe not stripping people of their AW's when they move into the state... as long as they register them?

Anyone who thinks this legalizes AW's in CA, I'd like to hear your line of reasoning and back it up with quotes from the bill under discussion.

I didn't do a careful analysis of the bill, but I can say, it does NOT legalize AWs in CA. It makes some minor but good and important changes to the way they can transfer. We are not going to succeed with a full repeal of the AWB. We need to chip away at it. They tried a full repeal last year and it got NOWHERE. It died in committee. If you take a look at the people on the Assembly Public Safety Committee, they are about as liberal a group as California can come up with, minus Jay Lasuer, the only non-Socialist in the group AFAIK.

In fact, CA's AWB wouldn't be a bad thing if they would just allow new registrations. I don't mind registering my AR-15; just let me do that, instead of banning new reg entirely. Oh and mags also. I wouldn't mind registering mags if they really care.

I called my rep about it already. Unfortunately he is probably the MOST anti-gun rep in the entire California Assembly so my calls are meaningless. Of course his seat is perfectly safe because California elections are 100% safe so once he's in, he's in.

The ONLY viable strategy for California is to make incremental progress. Last year they passed some bill that lets single-shot pistols like that Thomson Center (?) be sold in CA without going through the safety check. Doesn't mean a thing to 99% of us, but that's the kind of victory we need to get. Small incremental victories.

On that note, sheriffs' elections are vitally important. Every new CCW person in CA gives us another hard-core supporter, and sheriffs control CCW. Get involved in your county sheriff campaign.

That is what you have to do then- get small things back.

Not the whole taco.
