protecting bare steel?

I started out intending to re-blue the slide on my KelTec p-3AT, as it has alot of holster wear. I removed the blueing, then polished the slide (this is my normal way of prepping metal for blueing...the better the base, the better the blue). However, I found that I like the polished slide in conjunction with the black polymer frame. How can I protect the slide from rust? Or should I just re-blue it?

Under some conditions (e.g., carry in an armpit holster in Florida) you probably can't prevent rust. But in most cases, just apply a light oil or grease (not gobs, just a light wipe) and it should be OK. Other choices might be a clear spray lacquer or having the slide nickel or chrome plated.

CorrosionX. Best stuff I've ever used for preventing rust or for cleaning up rust that has already started.

I'll second the CorrosionX. Not only is it by far the best rust preventer that I've ever used, it's also the best lubricant I've ever found. I can't believe the difference in my 22/45 since I started using it. Cleaning consists of simply wiping off residue and re-oiling and it'll run 3 bricks reliably without cleaning now.
