Can I Carry? CCW coverage calculator

Hey all, I was tired of using packing.org's tool for figuring out which CCW permits I should get, so I made my own. I figured other people might be interested in using it as well, so I'm releasing it in its very beta state, but hey, maybe you can help me make it better.
If you're like me, then you're probably wondering how to maximize your CCW coverage while minimizing the number of permits and applications fees. I wasn't satisfied with the packing.org license tool, so I created my own, based on packing.org's data.
"Can I Carry?" will allow you to quickly determine which states you are covered in, and determine what non-resident permits you'll need to get coverage in the rest.
"Can I Carry?" also comes with a CCW database editor, so if a State's CCW status changes, you can update it (for instance, in 2007 when Kansas & Nebraska start their CCW program).
Requires Windows 2000/XP & .NET 1.x+

(if somebody wants to host this directly, please feel free)
NOTE: The download link will take you to the megaupload site, it'll make you wait 45 seconds, and then the link to download will appear - it'll countdown, then say "Click here to download". It also may be covered up by a megaupload links window (damn flash), close it and the link will be underneath.

Nice tool, thanks. I like to have stuff like this on hand for the times when internet access is not available. One thing though, Texas signed a reciprocation agreement with Indiana in November 2005. I have a copy of the proclamation signed by Rick Perry should I ever find myself in Big Tex. No big deal, I edited the database file on the copy I downloaded.

a WinRar program is what you need, it's freeware too.

Well, I found lots of shareware that disables the software after 40 days, or buy it for $30. I'd like to be able to download the database itself, uncompressed. It can't be all that huge.

I guess I'm not doing something right. Now I get a pop-up message that I have to alter a registry setting, and I'm not that computer literate. I appreciate you posting the files for me in any case.
Thanks, Jay

Sorry about the rar, it's just what I had handy :/ I'd appreciate it if someone would rehost it as a zip.

I'm not sure what you're problem is, my program shouldn't have to alter any registry settings at all...? About the only thing I can recommend is to see if you have a recent version of .NET installed.

I like it, my only thought/request would be to have the states that you CAN carry in would be colored any other color than Red. Red makes me think, NO or STOP.

Somebody else had the same problem - I don't know what to recommend, other than trying a newer version of .NET - what version of .NET do you have installed?

Now, I can code this in several different languages, like...
a) Java - eventually, although GUI development is a pain in the butt
b) Flash - eventually, although I'm not fully conversant in ActionScript
c) AJAX - eventually, although Flash will probably pave the way for this to happen (ActionScript is very similar to JavaScript)
And unfortunately, I don't know how to do any coding in Blackberry/mobile devices.
Future versions are planned, once I get the bugs worked out and the features set in stone. In the meantime, it's stuck on windows/.NET

Fantastic idea, especially given how often packing is down. Though of an autoupdate script that would check for an updated xml file on startup and download it to keep it up to date?

Hey zaijian, hate to nitpick, but I think it would be better if you had Green where you could CCW and red where you can't. I was messed up when I first used the program since I thought blue was where I could CCW.:o I was thinking "***, why is North Dakota red?" It took me a fer minutes for me to figure it out.
If not, then could you please include a key that tells what colors mean what?

Heh, fixed in version 1.1 - I turned into a very obvious red light/green light. I was an idiot when I first started and thought, red state/blue state :)

Sorry Mizzle, I don't have a solution to this problem yet, although a few other people seem to have run into it as well. Have you tried reinstalling .NET 1.1? If that doesn't work, how about trying 2.0?

This is what I had to do...
Once NET was installed (I downloaded 2.0), the database worked fine.

Only beef I have is with our governments, not your program, it's awesome.
As an Oregonian, I can't pack in Washington and the closest neighboring states are Idaho and Montana.. And Oregon doesn't honor other states permits. And if I cover my bases and get a Washington permit, I can pack in in states more than 1000 miles away in most cases.
Goes to show how dysfunctional our state governments really are.....drat.
But again, what a neat application, nice work.

Hey Mods....
Once this is hosted, you should make this a floater.....
Keep in mind that even though this trys to be all inclusive, you should still read up on any state you carry in, not just go by this chart.....

I'd suggest changing the name to "May I carry?" "Can I" brings into question your physical abilty to carry. :)

"May" doesn't have the same ring to it. Anyway, it's better alliteration with "Can" :)
