Safe-eject?

As I was at work this morning, I saw the CUTEST thing...

The topside watches on one of the submarines was turing over, and as part of that process, they unload their guns to prove it is safe. Okay...but to get the bullet out of the chamber, they put this cute little plastic thing over the slide, and it has a chamber where it catches the unspent cartridge as it is ejected from the gun.

I myself have always tried to prove my manhood by plucking the unspent cartidge out of the air, but having seen the tiny amount of training most of these sailors get firsthand, I can see why a gadget like this is useful.

I did some research on it, and can't find the manufacturer, but I did find a company that includes one with each gun, and the reason they state for using the gadget?

Prevents possible detonation of cartridges during ejection
:what:

I for one have NEVER heard of a case of a cartridge exploding during ejection. But, I AM only an egg...does this sound like like complete and utter hooey to anyone else?

I just can't help but wondering how much this little piece of plastic(probably designed to some mil-spec number) is costing our government.

I've heard of just such a thing happening, I think it was at an IPSC match a year or two ago. Some dude cupped the ejection port on his gun, and somehow the bullet got stuck in the port at just the right position for the primer to be crushed by the extractor. Ouch.

At the club I used to shoot at, there was a post hung up about this (it may have been out of Front Sight magazine, but I don't remember for sure.)

I always just shuck the chambered cartridge out onto the ground.

Like I said, I have never claimed to see/hear/done it all...now I know, but what a bad set of circumstances.
