SKS annoyance

I was shooting my Chinese, arsenal 26 SKS at my sisters house over the weekend and the cleaning rod kept following the rounds downrange. It's a mint condition example except that when I picked it up the seller didn't have the cleaning rod. I found one at a local gun show and thought all was good. Are there different head diameters for the various makes of SKS's? Or is the rod supposed to screw into the stock like my turnbolt's? It doesn't seem to be threaded. Any help will be duly appreciated.
Thanks.

The cleaning rod is held in place by the bayonet. If you don't have a bayo on there you don't have anything holding the cleaning rod in place.

The bayonet on my Yugo SKS keeps the cleaning rod in place---not sure if there are different sizes or not.
Looks like you beat me to the post---sorry for the repeat.

Ahh ... the bayonet. That would explain it. As I have no idea if this SKS is preban or not, I took the bayonet off just to be on the safe side.:banghead:
Thanks.

Yah, on a Chinese SKS just remove your cleaning rod and set it in a closet. The first time i shot mine i was annoyed by that and almost lost my cleaning rod without even knowing it.Its not worth installing a bayo due to the IDIOTIC atf rules!!!

If you really want the cleaning rod on the gun, you can just wrap it with black electrical tape at certain points and that should hold it in place. I see the need for it because I never use the steel rods on my guns anyway, I always use aluminum cleaning rods to protect the bore.

Howdy
Here is what you can do. Take a 5/16 diameter roll pin cut off a piece of it 3/8 to 1/2" long. Clamp it in the V notch in a set of vice jaws so it is compressed closed. Drill it out with a 7/32 diameter drill.
Deburr all the edges and seat the roll pin into the hole where the rod goes thru at the muzzle. This will shrink the hole enough so the rod does not come out on its own.
You will have to use your gas port tool thru the hole in the head of the rod to pry it away from its rest so it can be removed. But it will stay in place. Good luck

Hows the ATF supposed to know if it's pre or post ban either? Is there a serial number range or something? Wonder if they have ever actually even checked any rifles for that or not...
On mine, I installed one of the pin on AK74 style muzzle comps, and that holds the cleaning rod on without the bayonet. Took the bayonet off when putting the comp on, so I wasn't aware that could a problem anyway...
