It seems that the ladies of NYC have found a hi-tech tactic to deter harassers and louts: Harassees (sp?) snapshoot their tormentors with their camera-phones and post their mugshots on the internet.

Holla Back NYC empowers New Yorkers to Holla Back at street harassers. Whether you're commuting, lunching, partying, dancing, walking, chilling, drinking, or sunning, you have the right to feel safe, confident, and sexy, without being the object of some turd's fantasy. So stop walkin' on and Holla Back: Send us pics of street harassers!

What's to stop someone from posting a picture of me for another reason?

Same thing as somebody with an axe to grind wrongly accusing you of being a child molestor or a wife beater:

Namely, aboslutely nothing.

I should post Bloomberg’s picture for harassing gun owners.

I should post Bloomberg’s picture for harassing gun owners.

Why dont we do that creat a site with the pictures of anti gun people, where they hang out, what they said, and possibly where they work? Lets see how they would feel with us exercising out 1st Amendment instead of our 2nd amendment?

If I were an thug, which i'm not, and someone took my pic just before I plied my trade, her camera would be in my possession and maybe her life.

It's going to happen.

It wouldn't take much of that for me to get my CCW permit.

I had to laugh at the poetic justice of it; in all seriousness, however: I think these women need guns more than cameras.

O&A talked about this on their show about three or four weeks ago and they and the majority of the callers on their show thought the idea was pretty lame.

You know, I couldn't offer much insight on the mechanics of this in my previous post, but in the intervening days I just joined the ranks of the cameraphone owners.

Not that I wanted to. But I wanted a phone with bluetooth, and to get to the bluetooth price point you need to pass the camera price point about four times over. Me, I'd really rather I didn't have a phone with a cheap webcam bolted to it as a "feature", because I already have several real cameras, most of them digital.

But I picked up a Samsung A900, and it has a stupid camera in it. And at least it comes with a USB data cable so I can suck photos off of it without having to email them to myself ($$$).

So I was fooling with the thing today, and it struck me just how much fiddling I have to do to get that phone out, open, camera app started (takes about three seconds to load), aimed, framed, and hit the shutter.

In that time, my lecherous harasser could laugh at me and casually walk away. Or, were I a frail and possibly inebriated female, steal my phone. And in a dark club I'd doubt I'd get anything of merit anyway.

I predict this will fizzle.

(Fo shizzle.)

Its not a bad idea. If you actually recognize the scumbag from the website its not a bad thing.
