From MD to VA?

I'm going camping in a few weeks and would like to take along the MKII or USP to fend off any little furry critters that may come along.....

I live in MD and will be camping in VA.....barring any restrictions with the camp ground, is there any problem with transporting the firearm as long as I follow the standard federal laws (locked in trunk, unloaded, ammo seperate, etc)?

By extension, is it OK to likewise venture across the river into VA with firearms to go to the ranges in the Northern VA area?

Norton,
On July 1 a new VA statute kicks in which basically preempts ALL local, county and regional laws regarding firearm possession/carry; state law (which is generally more friendly) prevails, even if those local regs stay on the books. You might want to weigh this factor in to your planning date-wise, since before then you'll still have to comply with restrictions that vary by county or locality.

In spite of that, you should be fine transporting the weapon(s) as you describe. DC might be different, in the event you plan to traverse the District enroute. There may be a Federal statute that applies to all interstate transport, IIRC.

Here's a site that has useful laws:http://www.packing.org/
