Parts Kits - why&how?

Long time reader, first time poster...
I always see these rifle 'parts kits' advertised in SGN. I never see ads for receivers for these things. Are people just building wall hangers with these or what? Am I not looking in the right spot?
Thanks

I'm keen to build a kit, and, from the reading I've done, it seems that the receiver is the FFL-part. You order the receiver separately and have it shipped to your local FFL-dealer, after which you can assemble your kit.
However, in the case of the AK you can buy a flat piece of sheet-steel, bend it, weld the rails in place, heat-treat it, etc - and no FFL is required. Info on that process here (http://www.surplusrifle.com/shooting2005/souptonuts1/index.asp)
Try places like aa-ok.com, globaltrade.com, floridagunworks.com, etc
Welcome to THR, btw.

Any ideas on who sells them? Would like G3/91/FAL receiver. Anyone make semi auto receivers for any of the WW2 kits (Sten, MP9, STG44, PPSH, etc)?

The best receiver locally-made seems to be the DSA version (http://www.dsarms.com/subcats.cfm?Category=02&storeid=1) - lots more info on FAL kits at www.falfiles.com/forums/
The WWII stuff you'll have to google for, I'm afraid.
Edit: prexis.com seem to manufacture Sten receivers.

I built one a few months ago...you get this idea you can build one of these cheap, tain't so! When it was all said and done it cost me about 50% more to build a used rifle from a kit, than to buy a brand new one!

I've done 3 FAL's, and have another kit waiting to be built. In the meantime I thought I'd try an AK. It's a lot of fun, but don't expect to save a whole lot of money. Build one because you want to try building one, not because you want a cheaper gun.
For the WWII SMG receivers, try http://www.prexis.com/sten/. I don't have any experience with them myself.
Another good site to visit is http://weaponeer.net/

It's not exactly an HK 91 receiver, but it's likely the best you'll find from what I understand: www.jldenter.com is the site for a certain smith which makes a rifle called the PTR-91, an American-made HK 91 built with HK plans and machinery. The web site sucks, so you may want to contact them directly about buying a receiver (and having it shipped to an FFL).

When it was all said and done it cost me about 50% more to build a used rifle from a kit, than to buy a brand new one! That's likely true if you can buy a rifle in the configuration that you want. However, if you want something out of the ordinary (say, an underfolder AK with a chrome-lined bore) it is often cheaper to build it from a kit than to buy a completed rifle and then strip off and replace/redo the bits that you don't like.

Every one you build after the first cuts that amount. I've got about 1 factory built WASR worth of funds tied up in my AK tools. Not counting my time, I can build compliant AK's from Romanian kits for about half what a factory built rifle would cost. Two builds was/is the break even point for my tooling. The rest are money in the bank...... :)
FAL tooling was even cheaper.
