Ive always liked the SA SOCOMS but they are so damn expensive. One day at the end of my collection though!

The picture on their website shows one with a full length rail (from the stripper clip guide to the end of the handguard), but when I checked with my gun shop, he said he hadn't seen any on the distributors he bought from. The problem with the short cluster rails is you can't use normal eye relief optics. I once saw a sort of mini rail that you attached to the stripper clip guide, but haven't located any available for sale yet.

On the SA website (www.springfield-armory.com) I can't seem to find the model with the full length rail either. Maybe I'll give them a call and ask "Whats up!?". I'll post any info I can get.

Between the SA 1911's, the XD's and the M1A's, Springfield Armory is quickly gaining my respect.

I don't have one on any of mine, but as I have read - yes. Dimensionaly the m14 and the m1a are the same in most ways, so stocks are interchangeable. The only exception might be if you have 2 lugs than 1 on some setups.

I shot one over the weekend a gun dealer friend had just gotten in.

It is sweet. I don't know how that small compensator controls the rise so well.

I would love to own one of these some day. :D They are very hard to come by right now and very expensive but worth every penny IMHO.

I'm getting a check here in a few days for an extra few thousand dollars. I can't decide If I'll get the XD-45 or the SA1911 Trophy first, but after that, (If I have enough money left :o) I'll be getting my hands on one of these beautiful works of art.

Roscoe, you have to admit that it would be a hoot to shoot. At least give me that. I need a decent long range rifle, but I dunno if I want to go to bolt action just yet. I do like the tacticool black, I admit, but it would look just as cool with a wood stock. The part I like the most is the rail. You can't really make rails any color except black or stainless steel (stainless would just look silly).

I think a short barreled M1A with a good
compensator is plenty tactical as it is.

Hanging all that stuff off it to make it all
"high speed/low drag" is just gilding the lily.

The other consideration is the weight; I think I read that it starts out at over 10.9 lbs before optics/mounts/gadgets.

My DSA Para FAL started out at 8.5 with an 18” barrel, and by the time I added a Tripower and Larue mount, and sling it’s up to just shy of 10lbs. Add a full mag and it’s over 12lbs.

I looked into a rail forearm, but there’s just no way I’m going to heft around and shoot an 13 pound rifle off-hand. And I practice off-hand a lot with 12lb Silhouette rifles, but the balance is about perfect.

IF the SOCOM starts at 10.9, you’ll end up with close to a 14lb loaded weight when it's outfitted.

I guess it helps in the recoil department though.

the one i picked up in the store was real heavy and real nose heavy, not well balanced at all.
I still haven't figured out why i need all those rails, couldn't I just attach teh bipod to a sling swivel instead of getting another piece to put on the rail.
Nonetheless, looks cool.

The weight is definitely the Achille's Heel of the setup. I just can't imagine trying to lug that around all day, especially if you felt like adding attachments to it. Can you support your rifle at arms length for even five minutes? It can get a little shakey even with a lightweight piece.

Either way I don't care for the rail out front. If I were to add attachments, I'd prefer strategically located sections of rail, instead of all over.

I don't know about sexy, but that is one mean looking little rifle (carbine?). Probably need to build up your upper body strength to lug it around all day but I think that's a job for younger men (and women) than I. Especially if you're going to be carrying a full load of ammo to boot.

But for range time, shooting from prone, sitting or even kneeling with the occasional odd off hand shot, certainly looks like an effective tool for putting rounds downrange.

So I gotta ask... "What's it to be used for?"

I'm not going into combat soon, if ever. Probably wouldn't use it for Bambi, but I could, if even just to scare the critter to death. ;)

Having said all that, it might just be time to buy another caliber platform. I've stuck with the .30-06 or the .30-30 trying to keep my clutter to a minimum... but that little rifle kinda, sorta, makes me want to reach for my wallet and...

The short barrel and weapon light implies it's for CQB applications, but the bipod and optics imply longer range applications. Can't say I'd ever set one up like that, but I guess it makes for a good photo op. I'd still like to have one :)

I shot a 16", 18" and 22" M1A before making my purchase.

The 16" barked louder than a 44magnum snubby. There is a lot of unburnt powder at 16". Sight radius was pretty obnoxious too, if you use the wonderful aperture sights that come with these rifles. The front post was too big in your field of view, since it was an extra-wide trijicon post and 6" shorter than the standard sight radius. The tactikool rails bugged the hell out of me. No contour to them at all, and I didn't like the idea of a vertical grip on the fore-end.

The 22" had excellent sight radius and smooth cycling, but was too long for my tastes... This rifle was going to be my hunting rifle too, until at some point I obtain a quality bolt action rifle. It did not come up quickly to point of aim. When it did finally arrive, though, it was incredibly accurate. My goal was to go bear hunting in the white mountains, and I wanted to be able to quickly get on target. This was too slow for me (or I was too slow for it).

The 18" scout is what I ended up buying. Very quick to aim. Standard iron sights on this (with a dab of "bright sights" green on the tip of the post) give me about 2MOA with quality ammo. The "bark" of the short barrel is still there, but can be moderated by using faster burning powders and is still not as bad as on the 16" model. No tactikool rails. I do have an ARMS #18 mount for a scope, but have yet to purchase a scope, so it isn't mounted.

One day I will end up with a 22" match grade M1A/M14, but until then, I am extremely pleased with this purchase. Having shot the 16" and compared it to other lengths offered by Springfield, I cannot recommend it.

They should go ahead and chamber it in .223 to compete with the TAC'ed up Mini-14 market. Preferably with a heavier than factory Mini-14 barrel, eliminating the only real complaint about the Mini.

The rails are starting to make the M1 into a usable patrol rifle. You need a flashlight on a longgun if your going to use it for serious uses. And optics are a huge edge. The rails make this a reality.

Damn sexy, indeed! So much so that I placed a deposit on one, topped off with an Eotech 552, Surefire M900A vertical foregrip, and Blackhawk CQD sling. I have to wait until May 20 to pick it up as its a regulated firearm in MD (probably elsewhere, though I don't know for sure). I just picked up a HK P7M8 (NIB), so I have to wait 30 days. But in 30 days though...yeaha! I'll let you know what it's like when I get it, but I expect it'll be much fun. Now I gotta order a Sage EBR stock for it...mmmmm, guns!
