NASA plans to crash a space probe into the moon in 2009 — a collision so violent it will be visible on Earth through a telescope, the space agency said Monday

Okay, which projectile type is this?
Slow and heavy, or light and fast?

What do you think, comparing to Moon it's definitely light, and it depends on velocity to create enough energy for something to be actually visible. My bet - light&fast.

So your point here is that light and fast (9mm) is good for show, but large and slow (.45) is for getting the job done.... have to say I agree with you

When you want to generate a blast instead of drill a hole, light and fast is definitely the way to go. KE dump is what sends stuff flying upward.

As for shooting at spacesuited people (or ships, for that matter), I'd still go with light and fast; vacuum is extremely lethal, and a fast projectile makes it easier to hit moving targets.
