April 15th is BAG (Buy a Gun) Day, and we all have to do our civic duty and go out and buy a gun. (Remember what Reagan said: "To Republicans, every day is July 4th, to Democrats, every day is April 15th")

http://i2.tinypic.com/veb13t.jpg

So, what did (or will) you get?

Here's mine (set up for Service Rifle competiton):

White Oak Armament DCM upper
Stainless Steel 1:7 twist White Oak Precision barrel
Wylde chamber
11 target crown
CMP legal float tube
062" NM front sight post
1/4 x 1/4 min rear sight
Pinned rear sight base
Rock River A2 Lower
Rock River NM 2-stage trigger
Turner AWS 1907 sling

Well, my wife has put a hold on firearms purchases until I build her AR15. However, a couple of weeks ago I bought a Taurus 45acp Tracker. I really like it.

Marlin 39A Golden .22 Long Rifle. It came with the rear sight height adjustment missing so I ordered a new full buckhorn rear sight but today decided what the hell and bought a Leupold 2x7x33 scope on her. This is my first Leupold and so far I am favorably impressed.

WASR2 from AIM. I don't have ammo for it yet so it still counts. Got my box O' magazines from Rapid Fire yesterday. Seems a waste to have a dozen 30 round mags with no ammo. :)

Well, I bought a Stevens Favorite in Tulsa a couple weeks ago. That's gonna hafta count, because I can't afford a gun now. I've wanted one for thirty years, I guess I just like the looks of them. Lord knows I don't need another .22.

Eight grandkids, that's a good excuse. :D

This new one was made first year of production, 1894. Its having the barrel relined now. I might post pics when I get it back.

Plumb forgot about the holiday. Trying to clear out the credit cards for the first vacation in 18 months (going to Las Vegas for a week), and I'm planning on going to a number of shows, at least one of the indoor rental ranges, and having a VERY GOOD TIME.

Besides, this weekend is Songkran (Thai New Year), and I miss the festivities of the ceremonial washing of the Buddah images that degenerates into an all-out water fight. The Thais do know how to have fun, or sanuk, as they call it. But I digress.

I forgot too... but I've got some cash I saved up and I'm thinking of a Mosin-Nagant. I have a Schmidt-Rubin 1911 rifle (older brother to the K31) which is fantastic, but the 7.62 ammunition is much cheaper.

An SKS would be at the top of my list if it weren't for the sketchy ammo situation.

Dangit. Jumped the gun again. Er...no pun intended.

I bought a Springfield Mil-Spec 1911 this past weekend. My first 1911. I haven't even gotten out to shoot it yet (I hunger for a range trip!). I expect it to be wonderful, like holding a puppy made of snowflakes.

I'm pretty much kiboshed for the actual BAG Day...orders from on high, so to speak.

If buying the upper you need to complete your AR project counts, I just came back from dropping the check off with Holland gunworks (http://www.hollandgunworks.com/) and the rifle i am building for my lovely wife (that in truth i'll probably be the one who shoots it more often) will hopefully "be complete" by this time next week.

if it don't count, then i'm SOL for getting anything for BAG day b/c the rest of the "fun fund" for this two week stretch is going to ammo and magazines for said rifle.

To all who have asked, yes you will get a party hat and goody bag for celebrating BAG Day even if you bought a couple weeks before or after April 15. I consider it sort of like opening a birthday present early...both sinful and fun.

I decided to reward myself this year and picked up another present in addition to the White Oak DCM AR15. This one is a beautiful 1903-manufactured Gustov Swedish M1896 Mauser. Former owner (WildAlaska) reports sub-1" groups with V4277 and SMK bullets. I'm going to try her out today.

...but I did take the wife to the local gun shop / range and looked at scatterguns. We'd been talking about getting one for our personal Homeland Security Department and maybe try a little skeet shooting from time to time with friends who do that.

Alas, our finances won't allow such a major purchase until next weekend.

They had an FN 1300 police 12 gage, 7+1 used, tagged at $340. Not sure if that's a decent price (comments welcomed) but I'm sure it's negotiable. A lot of Bennelli's too, but I preferred the look and feel of the 1300. The large capacity would come in handy if the local barbarians ever ford the moat and breach the walls. I filed my tax return in early February, so my first BAG Day 2006 purchase came early, Feb. 21, to be exact. I picked up my first 1911, a Springfield WWII GI replica. I put about 400 rounds through it and once in every 100 it would jam. Sent it back to Springfield for work, they put a new extractor in it and it's eaten about 400 more rounds since then with no problems whatsoever. Those tiny GI sights take some getting used to after the big 3-dot sights on my two Ruger P-Series pistols, but I figure they'll make me a better shooter in the long run.
I wanted a Kimber Tactical Ultra II, too. My gun dealer told me his distributors said they were on backorder and the wait time was going to be at least a couple of months. A couple of weekends ago, I was talking with my stepdad's business partner. He's got a Kimber Tactical Ultra II and has been raving about it...or rather, he HAD a Kimber Tactical Ultra II, you know where this is going, right?
"I'm gonna sell my Kimber...you want it? I'll sell it to you for what I paid for it ($931 after tax), think it over a couple days and let me know."
"Won't be no thinkin, I'll take it!"
So I did. He had not even broken it in, had only put about 50 rounds through it. Went and picked it up the next day, the 2nd, to be exact. God, but that's a beautiful gun, and it shoots like a dream, even in my inexperienced hands. I put 100 rounds through it that day, and another 100 a week ago Saturday, with more to come this week. :D

I had ordered it a couple of weeks ago and it came in Tuesday. I had planned on picking it up Friday (01/14) but decided to save myself a 100 mile (round) trip and picked it up BAG day as I had planned on going to the range that day and it is ~5 miles away from the shop.

Bought a CZ 452 Scout to be used as a teaching aid. Wood pattern is very very nice for $210 gun and shoots with precision (factory target was under 1" @ 55 yds, CZ factory target are shot for function and not for groups I have read, I was getting less than 1" at 25 yds during a short try out at the range - open sights, pretty good for my crappy eyes). Groups were ~1 to the left on a 6:00 hold under a 2" bull, though. Need to drift the front a little.

As it turns out, my BAG day guns were two very nice condition rifles, a 1927 Izhevsk MN91/30 Dragoon conversion, and a "fake" 1944 No5Mk1 with a No4Mk1 reciever and a match bolt, and some Pakistani scribbling on the stock.
