Hey all. This will be my first post here on THR.

I would appreciate your imput on what would be a good price for a new S&W 686+ 6" I have found one at a dealer for about $570 all up. Is this a good price or should I keep looking? Thanks.

I recently bought a 5 inch (which probably should be MORE than a 6 since it's pretty rare) for $499.99. So based on that I think you SHOULD be able to find a better deal.

They are going for about $540 in Nazifornia where rape prices are the order of the day. Check out Gunsamerica for a good fix on price points.

I agree. That gun is just too common to do the supply and demand thing.

Buy used. If in good shape you will save a bundle. The 686 will hold up for quite a long time.

Keep looking. A 686 Plus at a gun show in Houston, TX, is about $450.

I concur with the other member's, a 6" six-shot
Smith & Wesson model 686 .357 magnum should not
demand such a price. Here is the ideal method to use:

4" or 6" NIB $439.95 to $479.95 (locale dependent)
" " LNIB $350.00 to $375.00 (95-98% condition)
" " Used $300.00 (maximum)

*FootNote- the 8-3/8" barrel length would definitely
be more.

Thanks for the advice everybody. I have been looking online and the best prices I can find are in the $490-$525 range, which is pretty high by what you all are saying.

Maybe it's the proximity to D.C. but the local gun shops are all in the $525 range also.

Sorry if I didn't make it clear but I am looking for a 686+, the seven shot revolver. Would that account for the higher price?

I guess this is going to take awhile to find a good deal.

Out here in Nazifornia, the extra round (+) version is usually about $30 more than the six-shot version of the 686. I don't see a premium charged for going from the 6" barrel to the 8 3/8", but the 6" barrels are by far the most common length for the 686, 686+, and model 66. Sounds like the DC area is just another clip joint. dealers jack up prices to whatever they think they can get away with and DC may be an affluent area like the Bay Area where I live. A good barometer is the sign at the gas station: we are paying an average of about $2.10 - $2.30 for REGULAR gas out here. If yours is similar, gun prices will probably be inflated as well.

I have seen 586's sometimes go for this much, but I have never seen a used 686 in good shape come close to this price, and I have looked at probably a couple hundred Internet ads for this gun.

With all due respect, please note that my $300 figure
is for a USED BUT NOT ABUSED Smith & Wesson
six-shot model 686! We are talking about a 686
that would grade out at approximately 85% of the NRA
standard's; example= uncared for police trade-ins, with
ding's, scratches, scuff marks, etc. And with grips that
might make some folk's think the weapon has been
used as a hammer*!:uhoh: Of course, I wouldn't buy
any weapon that had been this route.:)

*FootNote- I guess you could argue for a case of abuse
here.

I can see the point of seven shots in 2 or 4 inch. Why would you want seven in a 6". Some kinda competition? Real nice used 686's are $300-350 around here. 2" 686 goes for a bit more.

I don't intend to use this 686 for competition shooting, more to fill a home defense role.

I think the 7 shot is advantageous over the 6 for the same reason folks put magazine extensions and side saddles on thier home defense shotguns, just in case.

FWIW:

I got a 686 6" that rated out to 98% for $300 a few months ago on GunBroker.com. A great shooter too .... love it!

Update: I located one NIB for $475 and bought it.
