The Dead are rising! What do you grab?

Many of our veterans from TFL will remember the thread I started there after a long night of too much sugar and caffiene. But, it's a new forum. We need to set forth a base of memorable threads that we can all look back on later and laugh (or not).

In any case, the scenario is simple. If you've ever seen The Night of the Living Dead (for God sakes don't get the 30th Anniversary DVD edition...they butchered it!), Dawn of the Dead, or the recent Resident Evil, you'll know what I'm talking about.

Your town (or possibly the whole world) is suffering from a zombie plague. Zombies are reanimated corpses (or are transformed people) that prowl around and hunt the living. They feed off of living tissue to keep what few motor mechanisms they have left going.

There are many kinds of zombies. For our little scenario, we'll go with the mutant/science gone wrong theory of zombification. Your neighbors are getting infected with the zombie virus, usually from being bitten by a zombie. Once bitten, they begin their transformation.

The zombie, once transformed, is hardly nature's ultimate predator. Remember, they're a product of man, not nature. They can't see well, and they're usually pretty slow. Most are fairly weak, though if they're mutated enough they might grow claws or talons ala the They Hunger mod for Half-Life. Usually, whatever mutuation reanimates them doesn't require use of the heart and lungs, though, so in most cases shooting them in the chest won't do much, unless you hit the spine or damage enough muscle so as to immoblize them. The surest way of putting them down is to destroy the brain.

They mostly skulk around in large groups and hunt humans and other mammals. Sometimes they have a good sense of smell or some other means of detecting their prey, and will follow you around relentlessly. They can't be reasoned with, frightened, or intimidated, though they will usually avoid fire, water, and cliffs and such (base-level human instict...brain stem stuff). Sometimes they'll avoid direct sunlight, depending on which genre you're dealing with.

Individually, and out in the open, they're not much of a threat, so long as you're mobile and have the IQ of a small domestic animal. It's when they surround and mob you, or catch you in close quarters that they cause trouble. If they don't kill you and eat you after biting you, usually you'll turn into a zombie anyway (if the bite breaks the skin). There's not always a vaccine, either, so watch out for that.

Also, oftentimes zombies aren't the only threat involved in a general attack of the undead. Often the unnatural science or unholy processes that cause the dead to rise also bring about other unpleasant creatures and/or mutants, which often pose a much greater threat than the zombies themselves. Resident Evil's mutant bugs, spiders, and "Project Nemesis" are all good examples of this.

So, with that in mind, what would you prefer to have with you if the zombie plague hit your town? Remember, you dont' want to hole up someplace. Mobility is the advantage you have over the undead; they don't get tired, they don't get thirsty, and they don't have to go to the bathroom. They can surround you and wait you out if you lock yourself up someplace, and the authorities might not get their act together to combat the undead menace for quite a while.

So, what weapons would you choose? Remember, you don't want to be running around fighting the undead hoardes alone, so bring some friends. For my team, I think it'd be best if most of the shooters had shotguns, with one or two having rifles for longer ranged use. The shotguns make headshots much easier under stress at close ranges. The rifles would allow the team to keep the undead at bay and at a distance. Also, each team member should carry a good chopping blade, like a Kukri or a short sword.

Yeah, I know, I should be sleeping right now. :p ;)

I'm best with a Shotgun and 1911.

I'd want a big truck first of all. The zombies I've seen move pretty slow and can't drive. ;)

If I had to go toe to toe with them, first choice would be a 12 gauge loaded with buckshot. Even if I don't hit the brain, the shot oughta do enough damage to their muscle tissue to take the fight out of them.

Something light (since I'm going to be moving around with it), low recoil, and quick to fire, like an AR-15 or an AKSU-74. Lots of ammo, something that expands violently. Two field rebuild kits.

Since headshots and round-count are key, assuming enough penetration for zombie-skulls, I'd go:

rifle: my 16" AR-15, with 1.5-5X scope, which is 0.4MOA accurate with the right ammo.

pistol: CZ-75B-SA (9mm), simply because it holds 16+1 and I'm most accurate & fast with it.

My assumption about zombies is that they must be reduced to parts small enough so as not to individually pose a threat, and that single slugs, no matter how powerful, is not the best way to blast them apart.

Assuming common civilian legal weaponry (no miniguns, full auto, tanks, flamethrowers, etc)

My rig:

A backpack full of bolos. Zombies are dumb, and can't untangle themselves.

Katana

Tube fed semi auto shotgun, 12 or 20 guage, and crates and crates of flechette rounds alternating with 00 buck...And you betcher butt I'm taking out the round limiter. If the dead stalk the streets, the ATF can bite me.

My .45 (why face the undead without it?)

ghurka knife for if they get that close.

Chainsaws are fun, but unweildy, so maybe I'll keep that handy for the lulls between zombie waves.

No no no … you guys have it all wrong! :)

Shotgun with variable loads is the only way to go with the living dead.

Load 1 (a multi purpose round): 00 silver Buck, Inter mixed with Garlic powder and wood (stake) fletch for ware wolfs and vampires. Works just fine in a pinch on most other bad guys.

Load 2: Incendiary slug combined with a cable connected pair lead sabots. This would be used incase of mummies. 2000 year + old rags tend to burn well and the cable shot will do well in breaking old bones.

Load 3: Shape charge, armor piercing slugs for use against Terminators that may arrive from the future and attempt to terminate you to alter the current timeline.

Load 4 & 5 Standard rifled slug and 00 buck for use against Frankienstine, beanstalk giants, big bad wolfs, Freddie Cruger, space aliens, dragons, trolls, orks and run of the mill dark wizards.

Back-up … a 1911 loaded with silver tip 230 grain

For myself:

1. G36K with illuminated reticle sight, SureFire tactical light (blind zombies can't see me!), clipped 30-round mags on the tac vest/LBE and as many Beta mags as I can spare. Rounds would alternate FMJ - Frangible - Tracer.
2. AG36 grenade launcher with 40mm flechette rounds for close-in work.
3. Beretta M93R on the thigh, 9mm hollowpoints. 20-round magazines are a nice size, and the folding foregrip adds stability when facing down an undead horde.
4 & 5. a pair of back-up guns, probably P229s with .357 Sig HPs, in back holsters.
6. Short, heavy chopping/cutting sword: kukri/machete/wakizashi.
7. Cyanide pills for zombie bites :)

My team would be similarly equipped, with whatever could throw the most amount of lead downrange in a big hurry. Since we all know that zombies never let you get long-range shots on them, large-caliber precision rifles are out. Chief among the equipment would be:

-Magazine-fed, semi-auto shotguns for close-in defense against large numbers of lumbering corpses. SPAS-15s and Saigas, with buckshot loads.
-High-capacity, high-RoF battle rifles for medium-range engagements such as "city street" or "graveyard." Must be able to double as room-clearing bullet sprayers indoors. 5.56mm would be ideal, since zombies rarely use cover or wear heavy armor (the zombie city SWAT team would be challenging!). Most likely G36s or M4 carbines.
-High-capacity SMGs for backup weapons or for more "delicate" members of the team (such as "girl caught in shredded dress when zombies crashed the prom"). P90s or MP5s shooting those super-hot 9mm loads the French love.
-Large-caliber handguns with high mag capacity. Preferably .45s - USPs, Mk.23s, Glock 21s.
-Various hand grenades: blast/frag, white phosphorous, and concussion/flashbangs (zombies have a hard time standing back up once they're knocked over).

Clearly, I put too much thought into this.

Rifle - probably the AK (SAR-1)

Pistol (because you just HAVE to have a back up before the sword) - CZ -75B (16 9mm rounds beats 8 .45 rounds here plus you can carry more 9mm)

Knife - Kukri (sword would be too awkward)

Hoo boy...where to start.

Mobility is key. So we (myself and my 2 shooting buddies) pile into the Jeep Wrangler. Can 4X4 over lots of zombies, and save valuable time and ammo while distancing ourselves from the threat. As for weapons, we have a vehicle, so we're gonna pack as much heat as we can. Our current arsenal includes:
-Chinese SKS
-XD-40
-Glock 22
-Glock 23
-GP-100
-DPMS AR-15 (20" HBAR)
-10/22T
-Bolt-Action .22 Mag
-.270 Win
-.243 Win
-Rem 11-87
-2 Rem 870's
-Couple of Mossberg 12-guages

After the zombies have had free reign of the town, there will undoubtedly be plenty of extra firearms and ammo lying about for us to appropriate and utilize in our fight against the zombies.

The we start with the hand-to-hand weapons. Machetes/knives/swords, hatchets/tomahawks, axes, chainsaws, and various other assorted yard tools (my personal choice would be a scythe)

Use these to fight our way into the mountains (fewer people in the mountains, so less zombie-food, meaning zombies are less likely to chase us up there).

Oh yeah, and we couldn't forget our women. We'd need to get to work re-populating the world. :D

the undead wouldnt necessarily be evil so holy water might not have any effect on them. since the necronomicon is written upon sheets of skin and blood is its ink and it has the ability to not only raise the dead but also conjure up demons, i think i might be doing what that weasel in 'the mummy' did: pray to as many gods as possible. hehe

i think i'd want to have a couple pet 250 lb tarantulas to help get rid of the zombies. they could eat them up and stick the rest together in webbing.

see all you arachnophobes that go around stomping on spiders will be the first the giant arachnids kill. they'll recognize us pro-spider peeps and let us live. we'll have a symbiotic relationship in that we make sure they have enough moisture and that nothing harms then when they molt, and in turn they will protect us from the undead.

ac 130 specter gunship
and a heavy supply of Napalm for more air support.

Yeah that would be about all I would want if zombies started walking around. Someone on TFL said that "In the movies that Zombies cant climb trees Sheeeeiiit Man. In that case I would be up in a tree with my .22 rifle and shooting them bastiches in the noggin." I recolected that from memory so if its a little off please forgive me. I would have to agree if they did not climb tree thats where I would be.

I wouldn't have much choice, my CAR 97 .225, a Walther P-99 with the hi caps and a Glock 29 in an ankle holster for backup. The main weapon would have to ba a shotgun, maybe a Winchester Defender or something like it. Hand grenades would come in handy.

G-36C with Trijicon ACOG. 10 30rd mags on the LBV. Another loaded 100 mags in my 1969 Dodge Charger with a 426 Hemi (hey, Zombies are slow :p) The .223 ammo alternates 2 SS109 AP, 2 Incendiary Starburst Ammo (gotta have the titanium shrapnel), and a Tracer.

Barret M82A1, Box after Box of ammo, 5 10rd mags

HK Mk. 23 SOCOM pistol with as many mags of Hydra Shok or Black Talon that I can find.

Two FN FiveseveNs (I know... but what if I really really really want them?), 10 mags each, fit extra ammo in trunk of charger.

One of those new 50cal Revolvers... cause hey, you never know. :D

Mossberg 590 Mariner
3" 00 Buck
3" 1oz Slugs

12ga Flare Gun, couple hundred flares (for, you know, pyrotechnics ;) )

10 55 gal drums of jellied gasoline (see above)

Naginata, Hand and a Half Broadsword, Katana, Bow and Arrows and whatever else I can fit in the back seat along with MRE's, Beer, Water, Beer, and some Beer.

Place the hottest competent chick in the passenger seat (I mean like the Sarah Connor type from T2... drool)

All of this and I would invite my 50 closest, similarly equipped, friends to take a 270 foot Coast Guard cutter or a really large extravagant cabin cruiser, out on the ocean... Zombies can't swim, can they?

After everything calms down on the mainland, come back and go road warrior on this country... maybe I could change my name to Max...

OH! the most important thing of all...
A waterproof container on a chain that hangs around my neck. Contents? One .45ACP Cartridge. In a situation like this, save the last bullet for yourself.

Don't forget the all-time classic thread (http://www.thefiringline.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=87258) on this sort of thing over at our predecessor forum, The Firing Line. To whet your appetite, here are a couple of suggested lines from horror movies:

1. "My name is...Dracula. Velcome to my...vere the hell did you get a flamethrower?"

2. "Before you go into that dark, scary, critter-crawling basement why don't you toss in Uncle Bubba's lucky frag grenade?"

3. "You think that chain saw is scary? Meet the Ditch Witch!"

4. "Okay. Every person who's gone into that house has failed to come out. Either there's one hell of a party going on or something nasty's inside. Since I don't hear any music, I presume it's the latter. Set fire to one side and shoot anything you don't recognize that comes out the other side."

5. "This is Adam 2-12. We've got a werewolf loose. Yes, I said a werewolf. Call animal control. Let those pricks deal with it. I'm going on break."

6. "Yes, I'm a cop. But that's a 300 foot tall firebreathing lizard. What part of 'not in my job description' don't you understand?"

7. "Yes, I understand that we can't kill him, but I don't think he's going to be able to do much to us without some form of locomotion. Now go over there and pick up his legs while I collect his arms. And I don't ever want to hear you complain about me carrying two 44 magnums again."

8. "Our own George Hill is walking towards his home late one night. Out of the darkness steps a threatening ghoul. George draws his 1911 and quickly Mozambiques it. Two dozen more ghouls step out of the darkness. George turns around and runs inside. The ghouls smile and begin to walk towards George's house. George races OUT of his house, this time with one 1911 in each hand, and two more stuck in his wasteband. He has this maniac's grin on his face as he races towards the ghouls. They turn around and run. George Hill runs after them, firing with both guns, yelling, 'Come back here you blankety blanking blankety blanks! I'm gonna go Chow Yun Fat on your ***!' "

Definitely need a bible. I know these are supposed to be science creations, but bibles come in handy. I would go with a King James. Not only did ol' Jimmy know who to hire to write a wonderfully poetic verse, but mine is a big honkin' leather bound deal that would work well for zombie skull bashing if I needed to (...and I'm Jewish... go figure).

As for weapons, I'd like something in a high-capacity autoloading shotgun like a streetsweeper with some heavy buck. Actually, if I could get a Mk19 mounted on a truck with all the HE and buck/canister I could ever want, I would be most happy. Maybe keep a good reliable something slung over my back, like an AK with a stack of magazines up to my ears. As for a sidearm... I saw one of these really cool but absolutely useless 30-rd 1911 mags at a gun show once (right next to the .50BMG that had been necked to a .223), so a few dozen of those, along with a pair of 1911's would do nicely.

Firstly, antidotes for the T-virus and the G-virus, which cause the zombie-like behaviour of people in the Resident Evil series in the first place. These I would take if bitten or scratched.

Eagle Becker Patrol Pack. Within this bag; food and drink, lots of survival and navigation equipment, and a large med kit.

Several survival knives, razors, wire saw, etc.
Radio.
Binoculars.
Surefire Z2 CombatLight.
Surefire M3 Millenium CombatLight.
Eagle TAC-V3 Assault Vest.
Bolle T-800 Tactical Goggles.
Hellstorm S.O.L.A.G. Gloves
Alta Industries elbow pads.
Alta Industries Superflex knee pads.
Possibly a combat helmet, a black nomex balaclava and some form of combat boots.
Hearing protection.

After the clothing and survival kit considerations were out of the way, I'd carry a SOPMOD M4A1 Carbine and a gen. III Glock 17 with as many mags for both of them as I could carry on the vest and in the backpack. Also, a backup handgun in the backpack and possibly suppressors for all the guns.

Also, a good shotgun is in order; I'd pick the Benelli M1 12 gauge semi-auto shotgun using Winchester 00 Buckshot and alot of spare shells in the backpack and vest.

Perhaps some plastic explosives, frag grenades and smoke grenades would come in handy too.

Oh, and some buddies to watch your six, help you call for help and get the hell outta there!

Anybody here actually play Resident Evil 3: Nemesis? A company of light infantry got WIPED OUT because:
A) They decided to stand and fight because they had M16s, grenades, etc.
and
B) They were constantly trying to save themselves at the expense of others, i.e "That zombie is almost on me and Smith" <shove Smith into the zombie and run>

That said, I would run'n'gun for the city limits with a reliable team. I'd want an M4A1 or M16A4 (headshots are essential, and I can make 'em with an AR-style platform all day long) loaded 1 : 3 with tracers (fire is good) : M193 (so is fragmentation). 9, 12, or maybe even 15 mags, 8 in the vest, 1 in the gun, and maybe 1 or 2 belt pouches. (Ammo is the only thing to worry about, with maybe an MRE and some H2O, if I'm not out of the infected zone within 24-36 hours, I'm not getting out.). Finish the loadout with a hicap wondernine (Glock 17 maybe), 3 mags for it, and a decent fighting knife.

[ignore this next paragraph if you're unfamiliar with the Resident Evil series of videogames]
That said, I seriously think my town could be Raccoon City :what: . Merck employs a huge porportion of the population, and owns a sprawling complex just outside the limits (like Umbrella  ). The architecture of the town that you see in RE2 and RE3 could easily be in my town :uhoh: . I hear anything about strange packs of dogs or cannibal cults (from the openings of RE1 RE2 and RE3), I'm bugging out!:p

Medium range: Mossy 500 8 shot Ooohh! look at the little pieces fly!!

Short range: 1911A1 when you care enough to shoot the hairy beast.

Contact range: Hand and a Half Jeager sword, T-6 heater shield, steel and T-6 Plate and Leather armour, and a 12 ga steel sallet helmet. Nothing says lovin' like wading in and smacking 'em on the head!!:D

Well, I'm not sure about which weapon I'd grab, but based on all the zombie movies I've seen:

1-Make sure I don't leave the back door open. Zombies always come through the open/unlocked back door. Go figure.

2-Make sure when I run away that I'm not with someone who will trip at a critical moment (e.g. zombie right on their heels). I suppose I'd also stay away from anyone likely to get clothing/hair/body parts caught on any part of the interior of a burning car as they try to escape from the car moments before it bursts into a ball of flames. I sure hate when that happens.

3-Stay out of the basement. Never go down to the basement :what:

But seriously....I'd grab:

- A bat or club
- Sword or machete
- Sawed-off shotgun and lots of shells
- Torch
- As many Glocks as I could carry

Well since I think carrying large amounts of ammo is going to be key I would choose the following guns I have.

1. My EAA double barrel "Bounty Hunter" and my 50 round bandolier.

2. My Pre-ban AR-15 and every mag and stripper clip I own

3. My Beretta 92 and the dozen or so clips I have.

Sadly (or not) most of these are ready to go in case of a "Homeland Security" emergency

Hey, If we can bring friends.........

I want that, and the 7th ACR with a whole trainload of class I, III, and V. Throw in some close air support from the zoomies (or is that zoombies), and we'll have some serious fun. We'd set up a good defensive perimiter, allow enemy to close, take cover and set off claymores, mop up and set up fresh mines. If the area became too target rich for that, we could un-a$$ the AO under armour.

Sheesh, so many of you guys are falling right into the trap. You're planning to carry a virtual arsenal, and you're gonna be the over-the-top, tactically-paranoid nutjob guy in the movie, who ends up fiddling with his gear and getting tangled in all those slings while the brain-eaters inexorably close in on you with their gentle, tireless, rocking gait of doom.

What you want is to be the wise and weathered guy in the movie whose underlying preparedness and coolheadedness comes as a redeeming surprise to the other characters. You do that, of course, with one inoffensive longarm and an inconspicuous sidearm. My longarm and sidearm, to be precise.

The obligatory 870, mais oui; loaded with 00, slugs in the sidesaddle for those nasty covered zombies; a belt pouch full of buck, and as many slugs as you can elegantly fit in your royal robins vest. I just ordered my Wilson Combat mag extension last night, so I hope this whole scenario can wait long enough for UPS to get it here among the living.

And, the high-cap 9mm (Glock 17 for me; night sights obligatory--it's not the 'twighlight of the living dead', after all). No point in sacrificing capacity for power, since CNS shots are the only ones that'll stop these moldering ghouls. Better use 147 for reliable penetration to those much-sought after braaaaaaiiiiinnnnss.

Ok sure .. I'll bite.

If with friends, each should have a reliable shotgun, be it a pump or a solid semi like a Saiga or something like it. All should 1 rifle 3 to 1 ratio of assault rifles to precission rifles. All should have at least on highcap handgun. Bladed weapons are good but only working blades. Katanas are fancy but if you get swarmed you want something you can slash in all directions as well as thrust. Something like a Gladius or middle ages short sword ( 2ft of heavy blade) would be better.

My load out?

Mossy 500 (7+1) with buck and a batch of slugs
CAR-15 with lots of mags of M193 (AP stuff is useless on zombies)
CZ-75B with about 5 mags
Italian short sword.

So if they can't climb trees or anything-

I'll jump onto a big tower, and have the following:

Air freshener (bunch o' dead people don't smell like roses)
Lots of food, maybe a portable kitchen
Ruger 10/22 w/red dot scope and all of the ammo I can find
Glock 17 w/33 round magazines
Mossberg 590 w/Bayonet, heat shield (when things get hot), and tac light.
Homemade explosives

I'll just camp on top of the tower and plink away at all of the little zombies. If things get hot, I grab the shotgun, as rifle bullets will simply go through rotten flesh with no effect, and head shots can be achieved with the 10/22 while being quieter and cheaper. The Bayonet on my Mossberg will have a 15" blade welded on to an M7 Bayonet handle for long distance slicing. The Glock will be last ditch, and the explosives are for when my trigger finger gets to tired.

Ten friends and a place to hold up in. Two M60s and a Browning Fifty cal with ammo boxes piled high. High powered rifles, such as Garands, M14s and Mausers for the rest of us. And a few Thompsons/MP5s on the floor nearby for those nasty close quarter situations.

My strategy is to wait the zombies out till help arrives, a la Night Of The Living Dead. Except with us still alive at the end. :D

Or perhaps I could pile said ten friends into a BIG truck and flatbed, mount said machine guns, put up some metal railings to keep people and things from sliding off, and getting in. Hang back a bit, use the rifles and MGs on the zombies and then blaze through the SOBs with the truck and SMGs.

The Israeli answer to armored hummers is the German Dingo. This vehicle is actually a commercial Mercedes-Benz UNIMOG 4 x 4 truck with an armored body. The vehicle, with armor, weighs 4.4 tons and normally carries a driver and four passengers (although as many as seven people can squeeze in). It's roughly similar in size and capability to an armored hummer. Israel is buying a hundred of the Dingos. The vehicles will be used for patrolling hostile areas, where small arms fire and roadside bombs may be encountered. The German army has also bought 56 Dingos.
