A Quieter Afternoon (PICS)

Last weekend, a buddy and I drove up to WY to shoot with a guy involved with suppressor manufacture. Just 5 minutes from his house, he has access to open land for shooting up to a mile. We set out a couple plates @ 980 yards, and had at them with some 308's and 338's. Winds were gusting 10-30mph which made wind doping very difficult.

L to R: Evo-9 on Glock 19, M4-2000 (223), prototype 1 3/4" diameter (338 Lapua), regular 1.5" diameter (338 Lapua), then two 308 suppressors.
The report from shooting the suppressed 338 RUM (real close to 338LM) was very similar to a suppressed 308. The best part was no concussive blast which normally blows sand and junk everywhere.

so how'd the glock do at 980 yards?
Zak Smith
April 14, 2006, 02:33 PM
The Glock is not optimal for 980 yards.

WHAT? I thought (according to some people on the internet) that a Glock was simply a "wonder weapon", and could do ANYTHING:what: :what: :what:
Seriously, sounds like fun, wich i had a place around here I could shoot at those ranges (and of course, where I am suppressors are verbotten)

Zak, you sure know how to make a man wish he was your shooting buddy!
Looks like you had a great day, even with the high wind issues.

I have to say those are really nice weapons.
You mean the Glock failed to shoot that far. That will be heart breaking for some that read this:eek:
On the 223, what distance did you determine that it was good for. Just curious.
Looks like fun shooting at that distance. Have not shot 1000 yards since the army days.

On a calm day, a 223 with the right loads can make hits @ 1000.
On a super windy day, even the 338LM was hitting less than 30% of the time.

In the picture, the striker is down on the Glock.
The rifles are, L to R, in the first picture:
Savage 308, Nightforce, w/ can
Remington 338RUM, Leupold, w/ can
AI-AW 308, USO, w/ can
AI-AWSM 338LM, S&B, brake
SAKO TRG-42 338LM, USO, brake
The TRG and AWSM will have the same model suppressor as the prototype on the 338RUM, later this year.

No, Glocks can't shoot 1000 yards. Their only trick is passing through metal detectors undetected.
Seriously, though Zak, you can color me jealous. Looks like it was a blast. And with open fields like that, no wonder the wind was crazy.

A Glock can shoot 980 yards just fine, but it's Indirect Fire. :p

Zak, as a newcomer I'm not sure if the proper reference is "gun porn" or "sniper porn" but I thank you for the posting either way!!

Zak,
That Savage seems out of place next to the AI's, the TRG and the custom Rem. What is the story on the Savage? Has any work been done on it? How does the accuracy stack up for the long range work? Who threaded the muzzle for the Jet? Just curious. Like running across a Chevy Camaro in a parking lot full of Ferrari's...

rpmwfo,
I don't have the story on the rifle, and I didn't ask about it. It was also too windy to get any kind of good accuracy data. I imagine its owner threaded it, since he has a CNC lathe in his garage...

Looks like you had a great day, even with the high wind issues. And how often, in the shortgrass prairie of Wyoming, are there NOT high wind issues?
I visit occasionally, and a still afternoon seems to be pretty rare. Still mornings are more common...

Thanks, Zak!
I have to smile at folks who can go and do what isn't feasible for me (good food for the imagination).

Zak,
Most of the pictures show You and Your buddys shooting from prone. But in the Long Range article series You wrote it is sometimes necessary to shoot form other positions. My questions: How far are You able to make hits on man sized target from sitting and standing positions? How exactly do You assume a good, stable sitting pos?

Hi,
I have pictures from non-prone positions in the albums from 3-Gun and multi-gun matches, the Sporting Rifle Match, the Practical Rifle Team Challenge, Pueblo RIfle Match, and others. See http://demigodllc.com/photo.php and look for those albums. The Sporting Rifle Match is quite difficult because of the number of non-prone shots.
Prone is obviously preferred because it is the most stable, and there is also some "sampling" error in the picture-taking because if the shooter is in a hurry, I may not have time to get set up to photograph him.
Excellent results can be obtained from the "classical" defined shooting positions, and one should look to NRA High Power, Silhouette, etc, shooters for the best techniques in those disciplines. In field-style matches, the position used is determined by terrain, and the shooter can often used aides such as shooting sticks or a natural feature (such as a rock wall, stump, etc).

how quiet was the .338 with sound suppressor?
Zak Smith

It's hard to give an accurate comparison without common reference points of other suppressed rifles. It's louder than a suppressed 308, but not much.

Shooting the Glock out to 1000 yards isn't that big a deal...it's trying to hit your target that's tough  Looks like a fun afternoon ;)
