I have just recieved an unissued bulgarian Mak, and it seems like a good little gun. I will actually use this weapon for open carry in rough "desert" terrain over the next several months and although unlikley it may be called upon one day to defend my life. Ive got a holster in coming in the mail, and I plan on sticking with the stock "thumbrest" grips.
I plan to
-Polish some of the internals, mainly to smooth things up a bit. I will NOT grind or file any part of the weapon.
-Install a wolff 19lb recoil spring (+2 lbs over spec, but this gun will fire some fairly hot ammo)
-Polish up the feed ramp
-polish up the magazine internals (they are very rough and stiff), replace the magazine followers with new ones.
-possibly apply white paint to the sights to increase visibility (I want to be able to return the pistol to stock if needed)
-copious practice (500+ rounds over the next month-if I can find ammo).

A few questions...
-Is flitz a recommended polish? (to be used cautiously w/ a dremel)
-Would new mag springs help the magazines feel smoother? (The e. german ones Ive gotten seem much smoother, with less tension on the rounds)
-Does a bit of dry fire hurt this pistol? Would a spent case make a good snap cap?
-Would moly on the rails be bad? How about the magazines?
-Should I use a grease, or stick to oil for lubrication?
-What is recommended as a sight paint? I was thinking white nail polish.
-Any other simple "upgrades" I can perform?

I wouldn't use a dremel, its too easy to change angles on some part. I got a good gummy abrasive, and spread it on the internals, and dry-fired about a hundred times. It smoothed things out a lot.
