I haven't been able to find much about these guns, much less a place to rent one. I've heard mixed reviews. Some people think they are the greatest thing out there; others that they are ammo picky and unreliable. I'm interested in learning about the capabilities of this gun since I'm into funky guns, and this is certainly a funky gun.

I have an M9 whihc is very similar tot eh M9A1. I believe the non-proprietary light rail is the only difference. Mine has been reliable and accuate. No problems whatsoever. It seems to be a notch above a Glock in quality.

the M9A1 has a standard rail the original M series requires an adapter.
lots of pistols released around 90's used different proprietary rail systems. sig,hk,S&W,walther,CZ
my M9 is a easy shooter the accuracy is pretty pleasing as is the trigger nice crisp short 5 lbs.
easy to clean and maintain

The Steyr M series became very popular back when CDNN was selling them for $300. I have an M9 and I really like it. Back when I got mine there were no standard capacity magazines for it so that was a big disadvantage, but of course you can get the 14 rounders now. The part about "picky and unreliable" suprises me as I've never had any trouble with mine.
So at $300 for the M9s, they were an incredible deal. At $500+ for the M9A1s you're definitely not getting an incredible deal anymore, but it's still a great pistol. If you're just looking for something different it's probably a good way to go, especially for the unique sights.

I just ordered one. Hard to find a dealer, 440.00 for an M9A1. It just felt so good in my hand and from reading this forum - and others I am pretty comfortable with the purchase without ever shooting one. I really like the trapezoid sites. I plan on picking it up in a day or two. I'll let you know my first impressions from the range

Where I live (Cumming, Georgia, north of Atlanta) there is a gun range where one can rent a Steyr. I think it is a really well made gun. Everything I have read about them is positive. If availability (at the time) had not been an issue, I would have propably chosen the Steyr over my Glock 19.

Where did you find one of them for $440? the best I've seen is around 470 to 490, and that is without a transfer fee.

If u like the M-9 try out the springfield XD-9. I've got about 15 9's and gotta tell ya its still my favorite never got around to buying the glock just can't see the need. The sights on the M-9 are really awesome but they take some rounds to get used to. Won't knock the M-9 I do love mine but nine out of ten rounds goes through the XD.

Neil,
Cumming GA is where the new Steyr Arms US headquarters are, not surprised that is the only place I've heard of there being a Steyr for rent.

and we both liked it so well, we bought a S9 and S40 for carry. Great sights and very accurate. I shoot 155 gr lead loads, I had worked up for my Glock 27, and it will shoot quarter sized groups at point of aim at 7 yards........chris3
