I'd like to spend under $750 for a reliable, accurate .223 AR. Are there any that are cheaper that are worth owning? I know my way around pistols and bolt guns, but I'm pretty much clueless when it comes the black rifle.

If you buy a kit and a bare receiver you should be able to put it together yourself for under that price.

MDG1976, consider building your own. Getting a quality AR out the door with tax, transfer fees , shipping or whatever will be tough. Delton offers a base
A2 kit for 455.00 that is complete except for the stripped lower receiver. That doesn't include shipping, however. Figure a good quality lower will set you back around 90.00 to 120.00.
Some money will probably end up being spent on tools, so keep that in mind as well. There is a thread on the board right now that has me considering all the options for my first build. AR's are pretty sweet so you may find it difficult to stop at just one.

$750 will buy you a Rock River Arms, Bushmaster, or Armalite if you shop around for a good buy.

After extensive research here and ar-15.com I've discovered that the vast majority of people out there believe that these three brands make the best AR-15s on the market (probably RRA and Bushmaster tied for 1st and Armalite #3). Honestly, why go for a cheaper rifle if you can afford one of the best?

Look around in the For Sale: Rifles and Shotguns section. As an example, here is a company that's got brand-new Bushmaster AR-15 M4s for $750:

Olympic arms Plinkstir.
That should be "Plinker."

But the current model is called the "Plinker Plus," I believe. A tad more expensive than the original Plinker, but still IMHO the best deal around on an AR

Over at the equipment exch on AR15.com I bought a brand new Colt SP1 upper for $275, a new colt bolt & bolt carrier for $125, and a complete like new Mega lower with a collapsible 4 position stock for $225. $20.00 transfer fee. Had to make my own front take down pin cause the upper is a large pin and the lower is a small pin (took 20 minutes), took gun out today and it worked perfectly. $650 and it is a great looking and shooting gun. Most likely will put together another one before too long.

I have seen used post-ban lowers without bolts being offered for as little as $250.
Add a new complete lower for $200 and a new bolt/carrier/charger handle for $165 and you have a rifle for $615.
This is all top of the line stuff too.

I have to give a big +1 pm Olympic Arms...I put one of the Oly lowers together with an Oly Plinker upper a few years ago...It's been 100% and I am very happy with it.
