I posted this question over on the M14 forums, but I figure I might get more responses over here, I have an M1 Garand, my first ever and I have a question regarding the rear sight.

The rear sight on my rifle is a NM and there are some weird markings on the elevation dial, from the lowest spot of travel to the highest they are, lining up with the line on the base, the lowest spot being between 6 and the line between the 5 and 8, so its, 6 clicks btween the middle line and the e8 then there is a R followed by another line then a Z, a F, then 10 then M, followed by the roman numerial 2, another line, 2, another line, 4, line, 6, line, 8 and it stop just below the R again at its highest point of travel.

what does all this mean, all the clicks are sure and positive, and I figure that the numbers represent distance, but is it correct in its travel and what does all the letters mean? and what is the battle sight zero on the weapon, or is that a more current creation.

If you don't get an answer here, try the Civilian Marksmanship Program's on-line forum at http://www.odcmp.com/

The numbers represent range in hundreds of meters (which you can use after you zero the rifle and calibrate the elevation drum). The letters are mfr marks. The "M" means it's an M14 elevation pinion, calibrated in meters instead of yards, but if it's on an M1, you'll pretty much get yards out of it (due to the difference in sight radius).

The battle zero is 2 clicks below 300yds.
