Which handgun are you afraid to shoot?

I have a friend who owns a Magnum Research "Lone Eagle" in .444 Marlin caliber (single shot pistol). I only shot it once sitting down on a rest before the recoil brought it about 4" from my face - Now I'm afraid to shoot it! :D

My .357 ported Taurus 627 loaded with Cor-Bon JHP's are so forceful the percussive blast gives me a headache after the first cylinder full.
I'm not afraid to shoot it, but my desire to continue shooting the hot loads diminishes after 10-15 shots. Then it's back to the .38 specials.

I was trying a friends' persuader mossberg 500 with pistol grip (And short barrel).
You can grip the gun just so, and pull back under recoil (One handed), and push forward hard, and the gun cocks itself.
One must add that this should be done from the hip.
You can shoot really fast like this, and it's addictive, but you must pay attention at all times.
Now remember, you're shooting a 12 gauge one handed with a pistol grip.
I tried shooting it like a revolver, and muscle memory made me pull it back under recoil.
Result: bloody nose. Seeing stars.
Wasn't smart enough to learn the first time, either.
Soon after, I bought a over/under so as to not play with his 500 anymore.

Any of the handguns listed above. The worst one that I actually shot was an original TC Contender .44 Mag with the lite 10" barrel and the square grip. One round of Rem 240gr factory ammo was enough. I have a .44 revolver which I shoot often but one shot with the square grip TC was more than enough.

My T/C Contender in .45-70, shooting any 300 gr factory loads. Not pleasant at all, and Magna-ported to boot. I stick to .30-30 which is loads of fun.

You sure the photos of that huge revolver aren't photoshopped? That's the first thing I have to ask myself now when I see something outlandish.
If it's real though, then yes, that would most definately be tops on my do-not-even-think-of-shooting list.

A 1911, they supposed gain some sort of mind control over you making you want to buy them, and customize them. Just holding one makes you question why don't you have one :D . Seriously though, a .50 Desert Eagle for me personally, I dunno what about it, but I would fear to shoot it.

The only handgun I've ever shot that I'm literally AFRAID to shoot again would be the new S&W scandium .44 Magnum (I think it's the model 329, or something like that). After firing only 3 rounds, I had shooting pains going up my wrist, as if my arm were saying "Hellooooo, carpal tunnel syndrome!" That darn thing HURT! Never again... The new .500 S&W Magnum (that I fired on the same day) is actually a whole lot more comfortable to shoot!

I'd say I'd be most afraid to shoot some cheap crap like a Raven, Lorcin, Jennings, Hi Point, etc.
if that .50BMG wheelgun is real, I'd be a little afraid to shoot it, but would anyway :what:

April 23, 2003, 12:23 AM
I dunno, at various times I've had the opportunity to fire a Raven (jammed about every 3rd round); a Lorcin, which jammed even more often; Jennings (every 3rd round again) and a Hi Point - which functioned reliably, but beyond about 3 meters I might as well have been throwing rocks for all the accuracy I achieved...what can I say - somehow I end up with friends who own cheap guns.
Personally I would be hard pressed to fire a Titanium or Scandium *anything* over 38 spl, and that .50 BMG revolver holds no interest for me at all, at least until they add on another couple of feet of barrel, a muzzle break, and a bipod. My general rule is that that if it was not originally designed as a handgun round, it AIN'T a handgun round. Although that seems straight forward enough to me, not everyone agrees.

Shoot a double loaded .54 cal Lyman Plains Pistol behind a 450gr Buffalo Bullet = the recoil sent the gun straight up in the air with my hands still wrapped around the grip :what: Considering it was a screwup, I had no warning that the blast was going to be THAT pronounced! Most impressive - Once:eek:

Last week I found the Smith & Wesson Model 29 0.44 Magnum rather unpleasant to fire. Every shot made my wrists ache and after a few dozen rounds, despite my hearing protection, the blast/shockwave gave me a minor headache.
Other handgun calibers that I would expect to be nasty to fire:
.50 Action Express
.454 Casull
.475 Linebaugh
.500 Smith & Wesson Magnum
.600 and .700 Nitro Express
that .50BMG revolver (eeek! )

Shooting buddy's American Derringer in .357 Mag. He bought it around 1991, last time I asked he still had 49 of the original box of 50 Rem 158-Gr SJHP. Something about "...a tiny fractional bit more 'Kick' than I expected...":what:

A .50 Action Express Desert Eagle doesn't appear to recoil much more than an average .44 Magnum. At least not the one I shot. That .50 BMG revolver looks pretty stout but there's a guy in Austria (I think) that built a revolver for the .600 Nitro Express.:what: I'm not sure if that would be worse than a .50BMG or not. Do a google search for Zeliska. Look for a .pdf file that's unfortunately in Austrian named zeliska2.pdf.

That revolver is something else... :p Not sure I'd want to shoot it or either of the new S&Ws, the Scandium 44 or the .500.
I've shot plenty of 44 Magnums and the 454 Casull I shot wasn't too bad. It was the heavy Freedom Arms with a long barrel. Not nearly as bad as I expected. Not sure I'd buy a revolver in 500 Linebaugh though I'd shoot one in a 6" + barrel if someone else were paying for the ammo. ;)
I still say the worst I've ever shot were hot 125 Gr loads in the Scandium revolver. Even +P 38 loads were kinda uncomfortable. I guess I'm of the school that thinks a big boom and a heavy push are more tolerable than a quick flip in a light revolver.

I've never seen one, don't even know for sure if they are anything but urban legend and Hollywood foolishness, but I want nothing to do with the zip gun. Described and portrayed as using a radio antenna barrel and bicycle tire innertube springs, held together by electrical tape, and firing rimfire ammo, I don't even want to be in the same dark alley when one is touched off.

Call me crazy but .454 was too much gun for this kid. Costs too darn much to buy, too much to feed and well, not much better than a 44 magnum anyway.
I know someone who has an "alaska" derringer in 45/70.. his wrist was taped for weeks after test firing. That guy also has a 14 inch Encore in 30-06 WOW! My arm was numbed by that beast.. but still... far more practical than the 454.
I've been near a guy shooting a 50 AE.. no thanks. The concussion coming off that was enough to rattle my teeth.
For the record, I'd shoot a Howdah in a heartbeat.:D

Crimper, I always wanted a brace of .54 cal Hawken style pistols.:D
Actually, Dad had a .25 cal Baby Browning that he never shot - he always claimed he was afraid he might stick a finger in front of the muzzle when firing.
I can't think of anything I'd be afraid to fire. I have a couple of 100+ year old guns that I do shoot. I have shot a Super Redhawk .454 with 300's at 1620 fps, and that was plenty. I think I will stick to the .480.
The Ross rifle is one bolt action that had a notorious reputation - I don't recall the exact problem, but if you didn't reassemble it properly after cleaning, it would fire with the bolt out of battery. :what:
This condition meant the bolt exited the rear of the gun rather rapidly, usually to the extreme detriment of the shooter. I think I might have seen a Ross years ago. Should anyone inherit one, use great caution.

Several years ago purchased a brand new Freedom Arms Premier Grade .454 Casull with a 7 1/2" barrel and an action job. Due to unrelated injuries, simply never got to fire the gun.
Now I feel very comfortable with my S&W 629 and Ruger Bisley's, both in .44 magnum. Feel those are really my limit.
Guess I'll have my .454 in mint condition to give to one of my kids, cause now I'm too intimidated to shoot it.
Safe shooting.

Hum...
None that I'm afraid to shoot.
But quite a few that I won't shoot out of respect for my hands.
Years ago I had a .44 Mag. deringer (Remington Double Deuce style) dislocate the 1st joint in the thumb on my shooting hand. Never did take the second shot.
