p89cajun April 21, 2006, 11:44 AM How do you guys carry an extra mag when you have to have your shirt tucked in. Do you just carry a mag holder on your belt in the open or do you carry it in you pocket in some kind of a holder. I carry with a uncle mikes IWB and tuck around the clip but I ordered a crossbreed supertuck and am waiting on delivery.

Dr_2_B April 21, 2006, 12:06 PM Cajun,
I KNOW I should carry a reload magazine but I can count on one or two hands the number of times I have done so in ten+ years of daily carry. On the other hand, I have been known to carry a New York reload on several occasions.
Sistema1927 April 21, 2006, 08:16 PM I pocket carry a Kahr PM9 with the six round mag and one in the pipe. I carry the spare seven round mag in the other pocket, contained in the leather slip case that came with a $4 sharpening stone at Wally World. This keeps the mag from getting full of pocket crud, and still works well after almost two years.
While this particular leather slip case fits the Kahr 9mm mag, there might be similar cases that will also work for pocket carry. For example, prior to buying the PM9, I would sometimes carry a Kel-Tec P32, and would carry a spare mag in the off side pocket inside of a small cordura knife sheath. Honestly, if I had worn the sheath on my belt, I doubt hat anyone would have given it a second look.
lance22 April 21, 2006, 10:27 PM I carry my extra mag IWB in a BearClaw Holsters (http://www.bearclawholsters.com/magazinecarriers.htm) mag carrier (clip on), which is like the mag carrier you described only a little bit more concealable. Now, when you get your tuckable, I would love to read your post about how it works out. Some people say tuckable just doesn't work for them because it's an invitation to printing but with a mag holder that might not be the case.
PLEASE ... tell us about it after you get your tuckable and wear it for a month or two.
As an aside, I recall that Jeff Cooper once said that the purpose of carrying an extra mag is so you don't have to go home with an empty gun, after a gun fight.;)
sm April 21, 2006, 10:39 PM Blue jeans, long sleeve oxford shirt with button down collar, tucked in, tennis shoes.
My normal attire as Preacheman, Larry and his family, Chris and his wife, others can attest to.
Carry is concealed as it the mag(s)
Been doing this for grumbleesomthing-thirty-plus-years-grumblesomething.
I have other druthers, depends on the druther that be. :)

In a Milt Sparks S-4C. Or a speedloader for the Cobra (the alloy framed Detective Specials) in a Desantis Split Six.
I tuck all my shirts in, and use a cover garment. I never cared for the "tuckable" method myself, as an Inside the Waistband is too uncomfortable for me for 12-18 hours of carry. You might find sticking a pistol down your pants is OK for shorter durations, but doing so with a magazine is downright painful. A magazine is too narrow, and has sharp edges.
Watch the For Sale boards. You'll see every month someone will offer one for sale after they discover the same thing.
MCgunner April 21, 2006, 11:03 PM Weak side front pocket.
mkeBob April 21, 2006, 11:28 PM P89..... I'm also waiting arrival of my crossbreed super tuck and extra mag pouch. Should be here in about another week.
Zach S April 22, 2006, 10:16 AM Weak side front pocket.
The leather belt cases for non-tacticool folding knives and multitools also work well without drawing attention.
I have been known to do both at once.
Janos Dracwlya April 23, 2006, 12:10 PM I carry two extra magazines in a Shrade Old Timer pouch, on the front right side (opposite my phone). I've sewn a slip of leather into it as a divider. Now I also wear a Gerber multi-tool in a pouch, but this is around the opposite side from my gun usually under whatever cover garment I am wearing (sweater or sweatshirt in cold weather, vest or safari jacket in warmer weather). My gun is carried in a Bianchi suede IWB clip holster on the back of my right hip. I'll frequently have a couple more magazines in the pockets of my coat or vest.

Ala Dan April 24, 2006, 04:37 AM I generally carry one of two 1911 style .45 ACP's in real leather as made
by Kirkpatrick Leather of Laredo, Texas. This includes the belt, holster,
and a double magazine pouch~!:D
AirForceShooter April 24, 2006, 07:16 AM I don't.
AFS
HighVelocity April 24, 2006, 07:28 AM I also use the Desantis pocket mag holder.
tegemu April 24, 2006, 08:48 AM In a pouch I made from an old piece of vinyl. Just wrapped it around the Mag and stitched it up. It took me all of 20 minutes.
Pilot April 24, 2006, 09:35 AM I don not typically carry an extra mag. I figure the 15 rounds in the gun is enough. The only time I'll carry and extra mag is if I'm carrying in a buttpack and then I'll carry an extra mag in one of the internal water bottle holders.
Srigs April 25, 2006, 12:56 AM Place it in one of your front pockets.
Or
Get a Smartcarry holster because it has a built in mag holder
Or
Place the mag in a belt knife holder.
One of these generally works great.
armoredman April 25, 2006, 01:22 AM Uncle Mikes double mag pouch. With my shirt draped over it, the square shape really doesn't say much, in this world of Blackberrys and other PADs. The pistol is usually in an IWB strong side.
Someday I'll get a more concealable method, but it works for now, and I do like having two spare mags.
MSgt B April 25, 2006, 01:36 AM If I find myself in a situation I can't get out of with 8 or 10 rounds....
I've made at least 6 mistakes already.

Well said..... I will be carrying a 1911 and figure that the best place to put an extra mag will be in a knife (buck knife (folding blade)) holder... you know... the black leather one.... that way I can carry it out in the open and noone really cares about the knife.... since its really a "work" style knife...

bakert April 26, 2006, 10:33 AM Hope i'm never proven wrong but since I'm not a police officer and pretty much careful of where I go and always aware my surroundings, I figure 8 rds of .45 ACP is all I need.

I (and I suspect a few others) dont carry the spare magazine just for extra round capacity. I carry it for equipment failure also. If the situation arises and I have a magazine related firearm failure I literally have "spare parts" to fix the problem in mere seconds. I suspect the number one failure of the 1911 usually relates to a bad magazine.
Equipment failure is the main reason, extra capcity is the second.
duckjihad April 28, 2006, 08:19 AM I usually don't. Don't figure I need it. By the way, what's a New York reload? An extra gun?
Jim PHL April 28, 2006, 08:41 AM Duckjihad, yes to your question.
When I carry my SA "Micro" IWB, I usually, but not always, have a spare mag in my left hand back pocket.
When I have my 342 in my right front pocket, I usually, but not always, have a Bianchi speed strip in my left hand back pocket.
Anthony_ April 28, 2006, 09:02 AM Just wondering, is this while on duty you all carry extra mags?
FBI stats show average 3 rounds fired in a firefight.
I know, better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.
I carry weak side front pocket.
Dr_2_B April 28, 2006, 10:39 PM Yup, New York reload is another banger in your pocket or on the other hip.
G.I.Bill April 29, 2006, 09:57 AM I also carry my extra mag in my weakside front pocket with nothing else. Also sometimes I wear cargo pants/shorts that have the perfect sized pocket for a pistol magazine, but the pocket is low on my thigh. However, after seeing a picture of the desantis pocket holster I think I have a new item to purchase, that's what I love about this forum:D .

LOL, this is EXACTLY my situation as well!
Part of my problem is that I just don't know a GOOD way to carry an extra mag all the time. In a pocket, like some suggest, it WILL get banged up, sat on, dented, full of lint.
I know there are special belt things for mags, but... I'm wondering if those attract attention. hehe I dunno... I really SHOULD carry an extra mag. :p
Instead, I carry a 642 in my pocket ALL the time... If my .45 runs dry, I guess I'll reach for that...
It's nice to have a plan... ;)

Dr_2_B April 30, 2006, 01:48 PM Strike Eagle,
Yeah, here's my situation. I carry a pistol on my right hip or in my right front pocket or both. I carry a phone on my left hip at 9 o'clock and a PDA just behind it at 7 or 8 o'clock. Left front pocket carries my change and my car keys while left hip pocket carries my wallet with check book etc. Can't carry anything in my right hip pocket because I could flash my hip-holster while accessing it. I'm fresh out of places to carry a spare mag. As it is, if I ever fell in the water, I'm not sure I could swim to the top with all the weight. Plus, I hate to think what would happen if my belt came loose while I'm walking down the street.
