A reminder to be careful at the range!

I have used this range a few times. Strange when this happens in your own backyard. Apparantly proper footwear is in order.
Gunshot wounds man at Kearns indoor range
KEARNS — A patron at an indoor shooting range was airlifted to University Hospital in serious condition after he was accidentally hit by a semiautomatic pistol bullet.
The man was teaching a friend how to shoot at Totally Awesome Guns and Range, 4075 W. 4715 South, Tuesday about 7 p.m. when the friend stepped on a hot piece of brass and flinched. "The gun went off and hit (the instructor's) right thigh," Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Rick Burbidge said.
Medical personnel were concerned the bullet of the .22-caliber gun may have gone through his femur bone, Burbidge said.

One of the first things I teach people is that no matter what the distraction is you must keep the muzzle of the gun pointed safely down range.
I tell them about bugs, bees, hot brass, slide bites etc. I really try to ram home that no matter your discomfort you must make sure to safely put the firearm down before jumping around like a lunatic. It takes a lot of discipline to not go nuts when a hot piece of brass drops down your shirt.

Dance of the Hot Scorpion! Yikes. Chris, even more important than Rule #2, is the Golden Rule, Rule #3!
4 Rules always apply, even in discomfort. Teach them the Four Rules, here he did not, and this would not transpire.

"The gun went off and hit (the instructor's) right thigh," Salt Lake County Sheriff's Lt. Rick Burbidge said.
At least the Lt. let the media know that it was the guns fault for going off at an inappropriate time, rather than the fault of its operator. These are the kind of guns that give the rest ours a bad name, and this example should be viciously demilled so that it never accidentally goes off again.
the friend stepped on a hot piece of brass and flinched.
Perhaps we need a new golden rule about wearing shoes at the range. No shoes, No shoot, perhaps?

Even my most casual range attire is tight-collar t-shirt, jeans, sox and at least sneaks, if not "chukka boots". Hat and glasses, too....although if I didn't have my glasses, I couldn't see the target 5 Yds away ;)
Hey, even us hairy-legged guys get nervous when hot brass drops down inside the shirt...:uhoh: Don't ask how I know...suffice to say no more v-neck t-shirts at the range!

Foggy, that's not nearly as bad as my faux pas in South Africa a few years ago... I was shooting my .45 and dropped a hot case neatly down the V-neck-T-shirt décolletage of the lady in the next bay. We had a high-speed impromptu strip-tease going on within seconds, and the lady wasn't wearing a bra either, which caused all sorts of consternation and monkeyhouse on the firing line! :D

Yeah, it just went off all by itself!

I'd have made you proud my last range trip out. I have a phobia of bugs and when I was firing my Beretta -- guess what? A spider crawled up near me! I was besides myself with fear; normally I go blank and can't remember what my actions at all. Can you imagine how severe this phobia is? I put the safety on -- thank Christ for Beretta manual safety, and placed the gun down. Then I stepped on the spider and calmed myself before picking the gun up again. I'm amazed I had the composure to think...:uhoh:

In hindsight, too bad I can't get one of those shells to go down some cute guy's shorts? I could use the entertainment...:D

It can happen, I watched a long time competition shooter shoot himself through the leg with a 45 acp semi wadcutter last summer at a local IDPA match, he was holstering the pistol and the safety somehow became disengaged and he had his finger on the trigger (bad combination and he has a hole through his leg to prove it). Fortunately it was a flesh wound with no arteries severed, so he came out all right, but it just goes to show it can happen to anybody in a moment of carelessness.

Mas, may want to try a carbine class: you've been hopping around all day, it's late in the day, you unbutton a couple (all male class), go into sitting and OUCH! Buddy to your left gets a critical hit with a piece of .223 brass.
Keep covered up. You look more refined anywho.:p

Single hit to the leg possibly cracks the femur, incapacitates instructor and requires airlift to hospital.
.22LR - that little bullet has lots of attitude.

Hmmmm... The Salt Lake City Tribune says the injured man was instructing a female student when a hot piece of brass went down her blouse.

Not that this means proper footwear isn't important :)

Wonder what kind of gun she was using? Not that it really matters I guess since she obviously had her finger on the trigger....:uhoh:
