Boy - tall order!!!
Honestly - there is too little to go on and advise froma remote source like this is real hard.
If she is at least partly experienced then surely she has likes/dislikes already? I transitioned my wife to a bersa .380, and also bought my step daughter the same for when she reached 21. Tho cal is smaller the one thing i find is good handling and shooting - and so placement probably better than a larger gun of higher cal. Well - for now anyways.
A compact 9mm like a Kahr might suit too if she is not recoil sensitive.
Could be handy to know what she has shot already, her build, hand size etc - so much to choose from so impossible to be definitive with advise IMO. Also, if for CCW it helps too to know carry methods envisaged which also can help determine platform size.

Go to a gunstore with a range and rent a few different guns. They might even let you put a mag through a gun that they don't rent but is on your shortlist, my favorite store does this.
Worst that can happen is they say no.
And if they only rent a limited selection you can at least compare recoils to some degree.

Greeting's Sir-
I agree with my friend Chris or P95 Carry, as that is a tall order.
It would be best for the two of you to attend a range that has rental
handguns, and let her try a few of those out. Persons of different type
statue, will have different needs. In other words, a 1911 .45 ACP that
fits you and I probably would not fit a petite 5'0 110 lb female~!
So, I would suggest letting her shoot as many as possible to acquire
a proper fitting handgun. Lastly but most important, get her some
quality training~!:D

Sounds like there is no problem and she doesn't need your help. Let her do the shopping.

Thank you for all the advice, she is about 5' 11'' 150lbs very athletic build ex softball out fielder she has shot my 9mm xd and liked it and shot my .45 1911 she didnt like that at all but I am looking for something for concealed and with her slim waist line I figure would need something smaller than the xd type handgun.

Is this gun for defense? I only ask because a .22 revolver like Taurus 94 or a Smith 317 is a decent choice for someone who is just getting into handguns. While a .22 is not the best choice for defense it will do in a pinch. The addition of a set of crimson trace grips would also help reduce the training curve, and make a range session fun.
In the event that your wife is looking for something with more punch, a 3 inch Ruger SP 101 may be worth looking at. It's heavy enough to dampen the recoil of +p .38s and the grips seem to fit just about anyone. Just a couple thoughts. Good luck.

I'd reiterate the possibility of a Bersa Thunder in .380 - be useful if she could try one. Even a KT P11 might be worth a try too.

Glimpse,
This thread might give you some good ideas to look at; http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=171820. Also, I've been trying to figure out what to do for summer carry once I get my CCW for here in Idaho where I'm stationed. These look like a good idea; http://www.kramerleather.com/products.cfm?categoryID=21. It's starting to warm up here so I'll update everyone here once the new CCW goes thru and get y'all a review then. If she already likes the XDs maybe give the subcompact XD 9 a try?
