The Magnum Marine is nothing more than the Express Synthetic 18" with a satin nickel finish.

The nickel finish is more rust resistant, but it's also brighter and more reflective.
So, other than the finish, it's a wash.

I think the Marine Magnum is closer to a Wingmaster is terms of finish quality. The Express has some plastic that the WM and MM don't have.

If you're going to take it on a boat in salt water, get the MM. Or if money is no object and you're not going on the water with it- get a new 870P (one of several versions made specifically for law enforcement, see http://www.remingtonle.com/shotguns/870.htm .

Otherwise, find a good used Wingmaster, a Police trade-in or an older model (pre-dimpled magazine tube, pre-plastic trigger plate, pre-locking safety) Express. You'll save several hundred dollars in the process and get just as good a basic gun as any good 870. But you'll have the $$ available to buy lots of ammo for practice and get some training along the way if you go that route, and don't spend it on show. 'Go' is better than 'show', invest in 'go.'
