Im going to get a scope that I can see stuff past 50 yards a little better with. I already have a 3x9x50 Bushnell and a 3x9x40. I would have got a 6x18x50 but the man where I got my gun said didnt I need one unless I was going to be hunting alot . Well I found out he was wrong so now I need you guys to tell me what size to get 6x18 or 4x12 . They have a 4x12x40 leuphold at walmart Im thinking I should buy it. (input please) Ive got to many 3x9s

Where and what do you hunt? Unless it's prarie dogs or pronghorns at 300 yards+ you don't need much more that 6x. The only thing more power than that is good for is using your scope instead of binoculars for glassing. Just don't be pointing it at me if that's what you do! That really gives me the creeps! I don't know if you are getting ready to shoot me, or are just admiring my hairdo. Either way, I may just shoot first.

Actually, I try to keep my scope set on the low side as much as possible when I'm hunting. When you jump a deer or elk and he's wandering away at 30 yards and you have your scope set for 9x, you may have a hard time seeing anything but fur moving up and down in your scope. For normal hunting, unless you are watching the other side of a canyon 300 yds away, 4x is just about right. In thick brush turn it down to 2.5 or 3.

...And what caliber are you using? doesn't make a lot of sense to put a 12X scope on a .35 Remmington, ya know?

the 12 is no diff from the 9 , if you are doing any varmitnor paperwork, i go with the 18 power or higher.

glass quality is far more important than magnification ability.

a 9x w/ good glass is better and clearer at any given range than a 12 or even 15x w/ poor glass. to make the problem bigger higher magnifications bring other problems into play that are a non-issue for lower magnifications.

get good quality glass, and most everything else will take care of itself.

btw, i have made first-shot kills on prairie dogs at over 400 yards w/ a 9x...

Like others said, unless we know what you are doing it is hard to reccomend the right scope. My 30-06 had a 2.5-8 VXIII, great for big-game hunting out to 300 yards, crappy for whistle pig shooting at 500 yards. My Wife has a 3-9 VXII on her 223, but she doesn't shoot past 200 yards so it is plenty for paper and pigs. Our 10/22's both carry 4x M8's, works great for 100 shots, not so good much further out. Now the 308, heavy-barreled rifle I just sold and used for bech work, it had a 6-24, but it was only used for bech, never carried for hunting.

I agree as others said, since I got my first Leupold scope in a trade, I have learned the vaule of good glass. My shooting/hunting partner uses a Weaver 12x and I can see more detail further away and have much less eye strain with my VXIII on max than him.
