I've seen a Star in .45 caliber. I think it was made in the 40's or 50's in Argentina. It looks and handles like a standard 1911, but without a grip safety. Finish is worn. What do you think? Is it worth picking up? The person wants $300.00.

Stars were made in Spain, are decent guns, only look like 1911's and have their own good fatures to be judged on their own merits.

I wouldn't pay $300 for one when I can get a new 1911 for not much more but if you can get him dickered down to where you feel comfy(should be maybe $225 for a real nice one) I wouldn't hesitate.
I have had quite a few of them, like them and think they are pretty neat pistols.

Good guns. Light reliable and accurate. Check the holes where the slide lock goes thru the frame to be sure they are not worn. Parts are almost impossible to get. Don't shoot +P ammo in it-the frame will eventually crack if you do. Mine works fine with standard velocity hollow points. Many that are worn on the outside are almost as-new inside because a lot of cops carried them, and they fired them very little. I would say that $300 on a worn gun, with 2 mags, would be around $40. too expensive. (original mags, if you can find them, will run about $40 also)

Go buy a RIA or a Springfield and have a new gun that can get service and parts if needed. Only a few dollars more.
