I was looking at the Redhawk I bought last week and noticed there is a scratch going around the cylinder where the locking mechanism makes contact on the bottom. Is this normal or should I have it looked at? Love the gun but am concerned about the scratch getting deeper.......Thanks.......Jerry

Unless it is VERY deep, nothing to worry about. All revolvers will eventually show this scratch.

Turn rings are common in revolvers. They show up more on the blued models. Smiths are probably the worst, followed by Ruger then Colt. I've heard a properly timed Colt won't leave a ring. You can time the others not to drag, but i think you compromise reliability when doing so. The bolt has a better chance of "catching" the stop notch if it is dragging. This is critical in fast double-action fire.

The turn ring will probably become more pronounced but it will not cut into the cylinder to the point where it's a problem.

You can see the turn ring begining to form on this Redhawk after 150 rounds. (The cylinder is empty, I took the picture this way to show the scratches on the hammer for another reason.)

Thanks for the quick replys. I was looking at a Colt 38 special MKIII and it had the same ring around the cylinder. So I'm good to go.......Thanks.....Jerry

Sport45,
How do you like your Redhawk? That's a stainless one? In .44?

I think I'll like it once I get used to the trigger. Right now I'm waiting for it to come back from Ruger. I sent it back because I was having too many light primer strikes when firing in slow double-action. I also asked them to take a look at the crane to frame fit and see what the hammer was rubbing on to cause the scratches seen above. It is a stainless model with a 5-1/2" barrel in .45 Colt. I can live with the cosmetic flaws, but had to have something done about the misfires.

Here's a picture of the crane fit.

Sport45,
Thanks for the reply and the photos. I had heard if QC problems at Ruger lately. Sounds like your problems are fairly typical. 5.5" Stainless .44 is what I've been thinking about getting. Seems like an ideal backwoods piece. Let me (us) know how things turn out with your revolver. Good luck.;)

I think you'll like it. The 5-1/2" barrel balances nicely and the grip angle (in my hands anyway) points naturally. Mine normally wears the Pachmayer "Gripper" the revolver is propped up on for the picture above. I needed a little more to hold on to than the rosewood stocks that came on it.

As long as I'm posting pics...
